Roddy, Miller,
& King Capture Win River Open Eagles
By Rick Faeth
The Win River 125 Open Show kicked off on Friday
Night with a short field of cars that were long on entertainment. 12-year old Brian Hubert muscled his way past new
I-5 Tire Factory Hornet Champion Chuck Knauer on the white flag lap of the Hornet feature. 14-year old Jeremy Doss got the better of
multi-time Legend track champion Micah Parmer when the two traded the lead twice during
the penultimate laps. David Dillinger Jr.
paced his #8 Camaro nicely keeping the tires cool until with 8 laps to go in the Bomber
Bash he displaced Brian King for the win.
Saturday saw 25 Modifieds and 16 Late Models sign in the pits for practice,
qualifying, dashes and qualifier heats. Jason
Bamberg in his sharp #5a out-paced the field with a 16.318.
Stockton 99 Speedway Champion Wes Miller captured the trophy dash in Mike
Garcias striking #57 car. Hometown hero
Mike Wright won the crash-strewn first 20-lap qualifier event, and Dustin DeRosier won the
Fast qualifier in non-stop fashion.
Veteran Junior Roddy was the fast qualifier with a 16.098 for the Late Models. Spokane, WA native Dave Garber won the four lap
trophy dash. Crowd favorite Randy Houston won
the first 20-lap qualifier in dominating fashion, and young local Derek Copeland wheeled
the Heritage Cattle Co. car to the win in the second 20-lapper.
Saturdays Bomber action saw Brian Smith with fast time, and rival Brian King
win the 15-lap heat. David Dillinger Jr.
thrilled the crowd with the trophy dash victory, the second time in two days he visited
victory lane. Sundays Bomber finale was
40-laps of all Brian King. The veteran from
Shasta Lake took care of his tires and held a comfortable lead over the field throughout. Chasing King to the checkers was Jerry Green,
Dillinger, Jimmy Sorrels, and Rick Jelton both representing Ukiah Speedway.
Sundays 60-lap Modified showdown started with the first 8 laps clean and
green. Young Cody Thompson lead easily. Several
single and two-car spins slowed the action to lap 15 when Jay Linstroth forged into the
lead on a double-file restart. Linstroth
appeared strong until a lap 22 restart found him booted off the exit ramp with
damage. Wes Millers turn to lead was
next with Darren Snider, Jason Philpot, Scott Winters, and Kyle Borden all within striking
distance. The veteran Miller withstood one
late caution and held a sharp line all the way to victory lane where he and his
emotionally drained crew gladly accepted their first Win River Eagle Trophy. Second through fifth were Snider, Lindgren, Borden,
& Thompson.
The Win River 125 Late Models saw defending champion Mike Doss scheduled to start
on the pole only to accept the challenge to start 16th for a $500 bonus. This moved Bobby Hirschbock on to pole where he
paced the field until the 10th circuit. Randy
Houstons charge to the front was ended with mechanical gremlins and he exited. Bobby Hodges assumed the point next followed by
Dave Garber, and Junior Roddy. Mike Doss had
made it to 7th at this early juncture. The
next 79 laps were clean and green until a lap 89 tangle with Mindy McCord and Tom Elam. By this time it was a two car race between Roddy
and Mike Doss. 20 more green flag laps saw
Roddy establish himself with a 3-5 second lead over Doss.
At the 125-lap checkers it was Roddy picking up his first Win River 125
crown over Mike Doss, Jeremy Doss, Bobby Hodges, and Derek Copeland. Remarkably there were still 13 of the original 16
starters on track and only 4 cautions for the event which was run in a brisk 51.33
minutes.
Kevin Barbas Northern California Pro-4 Modified Series ran separate shows
both Saturday & Sunday with Chris Straka winning the 25-laps feature on Saturday over
Ken Gifford, Andy Vanderveer, Marty Lewis, & Curt Lewis.
On Sunday it was Straka again over Gifford in the 35-lapper. Codi Barba was third, with Marty & Curt Lewis
again rounding out the top five.
