JUNE 28, 2008 - Smoky and Smokin - A Night at the Races
in Shasta
Despite thick smoke from
the hundreds of fires burning in the area, intrepid fans braved the heat and the smoke to
be witness to some of the best racing of the seasons. There was an EPIC battle
between Bill Lancaster and Gary Pyzsora during the Late Model main event. Gary,
whose car was running in top condition, was dogged for a dozen plus laps as "Wild
Bill Lancaster" worked every angle possible to unseat the veteran driver in the Auto
City late model for second place at the checkered flag. Point leader Alan Pyzsora
ended the evening culminating in his third main event triumph of 2008 on a very special
night that saw his teenage daughter Taylor serve as the SRP trophy presenter.
Congrats to Jon Vanderpool who dominated and won
the Modified Feature Event. This was the young Vanderpool's first feature win of
2008 and second career victory. On the start he moved quickly to the front and
started to walk away from the pack. As the rest of the field sliced and diced and
occaisionally utilized the potential of the Shasta two groove option to make some strong
passes - mostly down in turns 3 and 4. This season has seen the Modifieds display
unparrelled competion, outstanding sportsmanship and respect both on and off the
field. This combines to make them a premier division at Shasta. Kudos to the
entire Vanderpool/Moreira modified team!
The Legends Division saw some new comers racing
including Trophy Dash winner Johnny Morrissey and his brother Phillip. Ken Crome,
Mark Tabor and Hunter Colodney added to the pack which includes point leaders, Micah
Parmer and Chad Foster. Going into this race they were separated by only a single
point. Some great racing between them had the crowd on their feet, but it was Parmer who
took the checkered first in the feature event.
Mini
Stocks continue to be one of the best racing classes this season. Matt Beardsley set
the fast time as well taking the win for the Feature Event just over Nancy Wright.
Ken Krause, who took third in the Main was the winner of the trophy dash.
Bomber action saw Robert Pacey set the fast lap at 19.854 seconds
but had to settle for second place in the trophy dash to winner David Dillenger.
Dillenger's night was a big success - he won his heat race, the trophy dash AND the Main event. Congrats David on a great night.
