Eleven
of the top Modifieds on the west cost lined up to do battle in tribute to Craig Brown - a
longtime fixture at Shasta Raceway. Randy Houston returned to the track and all around
racer Steven Gannon made his modified debut in the #18 of Jack Epperson. And, won
the Trophy Dash. Steven holds championships in Outlaw Karts, Mini Stocks, Pro Stocks, Late
Models, Super Late Models and now proved his skills in a modified. The big money
purse also brought back to the track Randy Houston to pit against the regular modified
drivers.
It was a 50 lap battle royal in which the
leaders swapped spots repeatedly. As the laps started ticking by, the front of the
pack settled in as Kevin Brink, Guy Young and Charlie Kramm ran a race so tight you could
throw a blanket over them most of the time. Kramm running third made dozens of bold moves
on his longtime racing buddy Guy Young, but just couldn't seem to get around to the second
spot.
Meanwhile Guy was upping the ante with
every lap - pushing harder and harder on the #23 of Brink. Looking high, then low, Young,
in keeping with the whole tone of the night, kept it clean as a whistle even in the last
desperate laps.
The race wrapped up with Brink taking the checkered first, with Young, Kramm and Kyle
Borden skidding in just behind. It was a great last lap with a legendary drag race
between the 2,3,4 spots. Congratulations to Kevin Brink !
In the hard-racing Mini Stock Division, Dale Stelt had a great start to the night
setting fast time at 18.500 seconds which he followed up with win for the Trophy Dash.
Christopher
Kuska,
making only his second run in a mini stock, won his hard-battled heat race and crowd
favorite Nanci Wright winged in a first place in her heat race just out of reach of Dale
Stelt. Main Event time saw 8 cars start the race and scramble hard for the front
positions. Dale Stelt made the best of that run and took an early and commanding
lead while Wright, Shane Spinner and Ken Krause race behind. For Dale a late race
spin in turns 3-4 brought out a yellow flag and forced the veteran to start from the back
of the pack. With only a few laps remaining he charged thru traffic but it wasn't
enough as Nancy Wright, who had pulled out to a decent lead herself, flew across the
finish line winning her first Main Even of the year !
11 of the best Legend Drivers on the West Coast came out to race under the nearly full
moon. Derek Copeland - Legends Champion - returned to the track in a very nice
rented legend and set fast time just over Chad Foster.
Current points leader,
Micah Parmer had mechanical troubles and didn't set a usable qualifying time. Trophy
Dash saw Derek Copeland take the #33 car to the winner's circle followed by Buddy
Cox. A hard run heat race saw Parmer win just over Copeland. The Main Event
had one of the worst Legend's wrecks in recent memory as race leader Jojo Owens was coming
into turn one he got caught up and impacted slower traffic causing the car to nose dive
into the pavement shearing off wheels at the bolts, then spin violently into the wall
where the damage to the beautiful 31 car continued for several more yards. Jojo,
visibly frustrated by ending his winning run in such a devastating hit crawled safely from
his car to the cheers of the fans.
