Giesler, Walmer, and Kostecki Are Hot on USAC Night at SRP

by Gerald Laurie

The USAC Western States Sprint Cars, Ford Focus Midgets, and Young Gun Midgets all converged on Shasta Raceway Park Saturday for a big night of open wheel competition on a beautiful autumn afternoon and evening. There was some great competition in all three classes.

Time Trials were the first order of business Australian Brodie Kostecki set fast time at 15.726 seconds in the Focus Division.   Idaho’s Johnny Giesler set a new track record with a time of 14.776. Also under or tied with the old record were Tony Hunt at 14.780 and Luis Ramos III at 14.830. The Focus Young Guns were the final qualifiers and Brodie Kostecki again set fast time at 16.142.   Kostecki won both the Focus and the Young Guns dashes with Geisler picking off the Sprint Car dash.

Kostecki continued his domination by winning Focus Heat 1 and the Young Guns Heat. Scott Pierovich doing double duty picking up Focus Heat 2.  Sprint Car Heats went to Pierovich and Cody Gerhardt on his 18th birthday.

Ford Focus Midgets for thirty laps was up first. Keegan Walmer, Garrett Peterson, and Jessica Clark took the initial top three spots. Kostecki moved to third on the second lap and began a tremendous duel with Peterson. On the eleventh circuit Kostecki passed Peterson and set out after Walmer who had built a sizeable lead. Pierovich got around Clark on lap twelve and the order at half distance was Walmer over Kostecki, Peterson, Pierovich, and Clark.  The second Half of the race was highlighted by Kostecki’s pursuit of Walmer and then several attempts to pass in the closing laps as both began to lap cars. However, he was unable to make the pass and Walmer took the feature over Kosticki, Peterson, Pierovich, and Clark.

The Young Guns fifteen lap feature started four cars as Walmer rejoined the field for the feature. James Edens and Trevor Hunt occupied the first row while Walmer and Kostecki resided in the second row. Kostecki sailed high in both turns to take the lead on the front straight and lead lap one followed by Hunt, Walmer, and Edens. The yellow and then red flags flew on lap nine when Walmer contacted the wall in turn four. With three cars remaining, Kosticki wound up leading start to finish with Hunt second and Edens third.

The Sprint Car feature was scheduled for fifty laps. Tim Barber took the lead over Tim Skoglund, Audra Sasselli, Hunt, Ramos and Giesler. Ramos snookered Hunt on lap two for fourth place and the field settled down for a couple of laps. On the seventh circuit, both Giesler and Hogg passed Hunt. At the end of ten laps, Barber led over Skoglund, Sasselli, Ramos, and Giesler.

Ramos took third on lap twelve and then Hunt spun in turn four to bring out the yellow on lap fourteen. Hunt rejoined the field after a shot trip to the pits. After twenty laps, the top five remained the same. On lap twenty three, Ramos experienced some problems and Sasselli, Giesler, and Hogg all passed. Ramos repassed Hogg on the twenty-eighth go around. The order after thirty laps was Barber over Skoglund, Sasselli, Giesler, and Ramos.  During the next segment, the yellow flew again on the thirty fourth round when Gerhardt spun in turn three. On the restart, Giesler took third from Sasselli and then got around Skoglund a lap later. Order at forty laps was Barber, Giesler, Skoglund, Sasselli, and Ramos. Giesler caught Barber and a tremendous battle ensued with Giesler trying both the high and low sides and actually leading lap forty eight and then taking evasive action into the infield when Barber came down entering turn one. Giesler maintained control, but the loss of momentum allowed Barber to pull out just enough of lead to hold on the last two laps. When the dust settled, Barber was victorious over Giesler, Skoglund, Sasselli, and Ramos.

A beautiful warm evening saw a nice fans cheering the Modified rivals Guy Young and Kyle Borden.   Point leader Young ripped at 16.382 in qualifying.  Brian King in the #64 Stan Gunderson car won the dash but in doing so got loose coming to the checkers and slapped the front straight away wall eliminating him from further competition.  Kyle Borden won the 8-lap heat race.   The main event saw first timer Sean Hays jump out front over Randy Houston on lap one.  Borden displaced Houston on lap two and Hays on lap 3 with Young shadowing.  By lap 10 Borden’s lead was 3 seconds.  The non-stop 30-lap event was run in a swift 8 minutes and 20 seconds with Borden blazing to the win and the Pepsi Night Trophy.  Young compiled enough points to secure his 5th SRP Modified Title and 6th overall.

The Player’s Pizza Bombers saw Joe Bratolli trip the qualifying lights at a 19.346.   Journeyman James Sutton won his first trophy dash of the season.  Brian Smith driving a Dillinger Racing Team Car won the 8-lap heat race.  In the 30-lap finale Brian King jumped to the early lead over David Dillinger Jr.  Mike Hubert Jr. and Bratolli started their march through the pack.  King rubbed tires with Bratolli on lap 8 necessitating a caution with King changing a tire and returning.    At the 15-lap turnaround it was Hubert over Bratolli.  The second segment saw the lead duo running multiple lines in an effort to negotiate traffic.  At the Adam Boddy checkers it was Hubert Jr., Bratolli, Dillinger Jr., Sutton, and King with Bratolli winning the points championship.

NAPA Auto Parts Mini Stocks saw Paul Sabourin garner quick time with and 18.233, win the trophy dash, and the heat race.  However mechanical gremlins prevented Sabourin from taking the original green flag and he entered the race one-lap down.  Meanwhile veteran Dale Stelt was calmly circling the 3/8th’s mile oval picking up the win and the points title.  Following Stelt to the line were Sabourin, Bob Garrett, and Pete Smith.

I-5 Tire Factory Hornet action provided the racing of the night.  Entering competition tied for the points lead were Chuck Knauer and Lori Weber.  Heat race action saw 12-year old Brian Hubert and Terry Keluchie with wins.  Keluchie’s son Dustin Hills won the 4-lap dash.  The main event line-up had Weber and Knauer starting side-by-side in row 5.  Wand Ash jumped out to the early lead with young Don Winegarden displacing her for the lead on lap 3.  Dalton Giles, Hills, Hubert were dicing for second.  Knauer was able to get the jump on Weber and put a competitor in-between.  Hubert moved Giles for second on lap 12.  At the conclusion of the 15 laps it was first time victor Winegarden exciting the crowd on two wheels at the stripe.  Hubert, Giles, Knauer, and Hills rounded out the top five with rookie Chuck Knauer the 2011 champion.
The finale High School Challenge Series event was won by Brian Hubert in his sharp #56 Toyota.  John “Hood Pin” Johnson Jr. accumulated enough points to the win the second H.S Challenge Series Title.

Winters Victorious In First Tri-Track Start

                                                                                  By Rick Faeth

Saturday Night August 20th the Tri-Track Challenge Modified Series blasted into Shasta Raceway Park with a good field of 18 cars,   The annual Paint Mart Night also hosted the NAPA Mini Stocks, I-5 Tire Factory Hornets, a Vic Hannan Landscape Enduro, and the fan favorite boat race.

Warm but pleasant late August weather saw a nice crowd cheer on Redding-raised Scott Winters cop fast time with a very quick 16.259.  Veteran Richie Potts captured the four-lap trophy dash.  The 10-lap slow heat qualifier found Kelseyville’s Dustin Knight picking up the win, in the fast heat 10-lapper it was point leader Rich Lundgren with the victory.  Lundgren pulled a six invert putting Potts on pole with Winters outside for the 50-lap feature.  At the start Potts pressed the issue and was ahead of Winters for the first two laps, then the #24 throttled down and passed Potts on the outside, where he paced the field by 4 to 8 car lengths.  Back in the pack Kyle Borden stumbled to 10th at the start but then started methodically picking off spots.  Potts held steady over Guy Young and Jason Philpot.  At the half-way mark Philpot had displaced Young and Potts and was gaining on Winters as he weaved through traffic.   The first caution came out on lap 41 where Darren Snider and Brenton Smith were found parked sideways in turn 2.  This provided the break which Philpot wanted to see and Winters didn’t.  Doubling up the top two on the front row for the restart saw Philpot gain the advantage on the outside where the track seemed to be the fastest.  Two laps later saw another caution for Mike Wright and a scrum of others in turn three.  On lap 45 under full acceleration on the front straightaway Philpot’s driveline yoke exploded ending what was looking like a very promising finish.  The final restart saw Winters pull away from Potts.  At the 50-lap finish it was “Mr. Modified” Scott Winters with his fourth win in his last four starts at SRP over Potts, defending SRP track champion Borden, Guy Young, and Darrin Knight.

The NAPA  Auto Parts Mini Stocks saw Pete Smith III garner quick time with and 18.886.  Veteran Dale Stelt won the trophy dash.  The heat race and feature were all Scotty Murphy after his Datsun stumbled with mechanical gremlins during the Aug 6th race.  On Murphy’s bumper at the finish were:  Pete Smith III, Stelt, and Pete Smith.

I-5 Tire Factory Hornet action saw rookie of the year contender Dustin Hills capture heat one and Sophomore sensation Lori Weber dominated heat two.  High-schooler David Felch visited victory lane at SRP for the first time when he beat the competition in the 4-lap dash.  Main event action saw Wanda Ash having the race of her young career pacing the first half.  At the 15 lap finish it was Steve Hills with the win over Ash, Don Winegarden, Weber, and Felch.

The third round of the Vic Hannan Landscape Enduro series saw veteran enduro racer Chris Lancaster win by a lap over Ron Wills, Jerry Shaha, and David Pabst Jr.  At evenings end it was Shasta Lake’s Brian King with a crowd pleasing boat race win.

Gannon Takes AABLM Trophy, Doss Captures Crowd

                                                                    By Rick Faeth

Saturday Night August 6th the Airport Auto Broker’s Late Model Series invaded Shasta Raceway Park,   Also on tap were the Player’s Pizza Bombers, NAPA Mini Stocks, Airport Auto Broker’s Legends, and the BPT Carburetor Pro-4 Modifieds.

Unseasonably pleasant weather saw fans witness local favorite Steven Gannon out-pace the late model field, and point leader Trevor Christiani capture the six lap fast dash.   At the drop of Johnny Miskill’s green flag it was Eric Gannon stepping out to an early lead over Junior Roddy, second generation rookie Jeremy Doss, and Christiani.    The #75 of Steven Gannon methodically picked his way through the front five and by lap 18 had displaced his older brother.  Green flag laps clicked off quickly through the 40-lap mark.  That is when things got interesting.  Several single car spins and the early give and take gave way to trading sheet metal.  Lap 62 saw three unsuccessful restarts result in the front row of Steven Gannon and Christiani put back a row.  This put Junior Roddy and Jeremy Doss on the front row.  Veteran Roddy got the beat on the first time late model youngster and soon had his hands full holding off Christiani.  Lap 72 on the front straight Christiani got Roddy out of shape sending him streaking through the infield.   The green-white-checker finish had Doss and Steven Gannon pacing the remainder of the field.  At the finish it was the veteran Gannon over Jeremy Doss by a scant 0.175 seconds.  It was difficult to tell from the pleased crowd who was garnering more applause the multi-time track champion Steven Gannon or the impressive young 14-year old Doss.  Roddy, Christiani, and Corey James rounded out the top five.

BPT Carburetor Pro-4 Mods were competing in their last SRP points race of the season and saw Chris Straka garner fast time honors and take the trophy dash.    Greg Van Cleave was the winner of the 8-lap heat.  Main event action saw Straka on a mission.  Displacing first Vinnie Marcelli, then Neo Nuno, and finally Van Cleave to earn his third win of the year at SRP.  Sophomore driver Nuno captured the BPT Carburetor point series at the 3/8th mile oval.

The companion Airport Auto Brokers Legends saw a good field of cars competing.  Micah Parmer broke the track record with a blazing 17.578.  Parmer also won the trophy dash.  Brandon White and Jeremy Doss, doing double-duty, won the preliminary heats.   The feature developed early into a four car battle early between rookie Chase Madjic, Forest Kuecker, Doss, and Parmer.  Mid-race it was Parmer with Doss all over his back bumper.  A lap 18 caution saw Doss duck into the pits with spark plug wire problems.  Amazingly Parmer’s veteran crew was right there to help rectify the problem.  The final 7 laps found Doss blast through the pack but come up 1 second short of the polished veteran Parmer.  Madjic, White, and Kuecker rounded out the top five.

NAPA Auto Parts Mini Stocks action saw the continuation and development of young Pete Smith III in his #31 Celica with a fast time of 18.675.  Dad Pete Smith won the 4-lap dash.  At the outset of the 20-lap main event it was the younger Smith setting pace.  In repeat fashion from July 3rd he set a pace that kept Dale Stelt at bay.  Lap after lap the multi-time champion Stelt took his VW Bug to the high side and down to the infield berm looking for a way to disrupt the youngster’s concentration.   All was for naught though as Peter staved off Stelt and his father for his second win in as many races.

Player’s Pizza Bombers action saw point leader Joe Bratolli with quick time of a 19.247 to pace the field.  Mike Hubert Jr. was victorious in the dash and the heat race.  Main event action saw James Sutton jump to the front and pace the first few circuits.  Brian King displaced Sutton on lap five while desperately holding off a fast closing Jerry Green.  Bratolli started his customary march to the front and got by Green and King on lap 13.  At the turn around Bratolli established himself as the car to beat but on came a charging Hubert passing inside and outside as he was smothering the leader’s bumper from laps 20 through 25.   Entering turn 1 backwards there was contact between the two leaders.  Chris Michael slipped by for the lead before a caution was thrown for a stalled Bratolli. With three to go Hubert had the lead and was preparing for a final lap pass from Bratolli who was gunning from the back.  At the finish of one of the most exciting bomber races in quite some time were Hubert, Sutton Bratolli, Michael, and King.

Anderson Explodes With Familiar & Unfamiliar Victors
                                                         By Rick Faeth

Sunday Night July 3rd was Metro PCS Anderson Explodes Night at Shasta Raceway Park, featuring the Bay Cities Racing Association Midgets, Taylor Motors Modifieds, Player’s Pizza Bombers, NAPA Mini Stocks, I-5 Tire Factory Hornets, and the Hornet High School Challenge Series.

Warm, sunny weather and a packed main grandstand crowd saw the recent master of the paved oval Chad Nichols of Colma, time in with a quick 15.091.  Nichols backed that up by capturing the first heat while recent Ukiah winner Nick Chivello was victorious in the second heat.  The 30-lap main event lined up with a six car invert.  Adam Boddy’s  green flag saw Rick Faeth step out to an early lead.  On lap five exiting turn four Nichols’ dominant Beast/Esslinger forged to the top spot and that was all that she wrote for the next 25 laps as Nichols bested the field in a non-stop 30-lap fashion by 5 seconds over Chivello.  Defending BCRA champion Nick Foster Jr. was third, over Devin LaHorgue fourth, and Faeth fifth.

Five-time track champion Guy Young out-paced the modified field with a 16.385.  Jon Vanderpool won the 8-lap heat race.  The 30-lap feature was set for a classic Borden & Young duel.   Young stepped away to an early lead from his starting advantage.  The 39x of Borden needed to clear Vanderpool before setting his sights on the swift, blue #7.  This he did on lap 8.  By this time Young played rabbit and built a comfortable lead.  For the next 20 laps Borden gobbled up the deficit but at the finish it was Young with the win by 1.6 seconds.  Third was Vanderpool over Michael Helwig, and Kelly Peacock.

Player’s Pizza Bombers action saw Mike Hubert Jr. time in with a 19.441 to pace the field.   Josh Dorman took the first heat honors and Hubert copped the second 8-lapper.  The main event started off with Hubert getting away to the early lead over David Dillinger Jr., Chris Michael, and James Sutton.  Point leader Joe Bratolli methodically was picking his way through traffic, displacing Brian King, Brian Smith, then Josh Dorman.  With seven laps remaining Bratolli bolted by the sharp #56 of Hubert for the top spot and held on for 1.8 second win.  Third was Dorman over, Smith, with King netting a top-five.

NAPA Auto Parts Mini Stocks action saw the familiar #6 of Dale Stelt picking up fast time honors with an 18.547 and garnering the 8-lap heat race.   The 30-lap main event was one of the most exciting at the track all year as sophomore driver Pete Smith III took the lead early in his #31 Celica.  Several early and mid-race single car spins kept the pack close and the double-file restarts exciting.   Lap after lap the veteran Stelt looked high and dove low in an effort to find a way around Smith.  It was not to happen this night however as Peter Smith captured the first of which will no doubt be many victories in this competitive class.  Dale Stelt was second over Ken Krause third, Al Stelt fourth, and Barb Bruner was fifth in her first ever start subbing for dad Pate Smith Sr.

I-5 Tire Factory Hornet action saw second-year pilot Lori Weber win the first heat and veteran Pete Smith Sr. take the second heat honors.  The main event saw a good field of 14 cars charge to the green flag.  Early action saw Wanda Ash and Weber rip off low-27 second laps on the first circuit allowing them to escape the pack.  Smith, Dustin Hills, and rookie Dalton Giles started picking off spots.  Point leader Chuck Knauer also displaced several cars mid-race.   With 4 laps to go rookie sensation Dustin Hills passed Weber and held her off for the win.  Third was Knauer, over Smith, with Giles fifth.  John ‘Hot Rod’ Johnson Jr. dominated seven other competitors in round three of the High School Challenge Series Event.

Borden, Gannon, & Parmer Break Through During Taylor Motors Fair Races

                                                                  By Rick Faeth

Saturday Night June 18th was Taylor Motors Fair Night at Shasta Raceway Park, featuring the Taylor Motors Modifieds, the California vs Oregon Late Model Challenge Series, NAPA Mini Stocks, BPT Carburetor Pro-4 Modifieds, and SRP Legends.

Warm weather and a near capacity crowd saw a 2010 Modified track champion Borden out-pace the modified field with a 16.488.  Jon Vanderpool won the four lap dash and looked primed for the 30-lap feature.  At the outset it was Klamath Falls’ Rich Cobb in his own #16 that stormed to a four car length lead.  Guy Young, Vanderpool, and Borden diced for position just back of Cobb.  At the half-way point Cobb having the race of his career still capped Young on the low side and Borden on the outside.   As the laps waned first Young then Borden expertly displaced Cobb.  With two laps to go it was no-holds barred as Borden loosened up Young on the back straightaway to forge into the lead.  At the non-stop 30-lap checkers it was Borden collecting his first feature of 2011 by a half-second over Young, Vanderpool, Cobb, and Brian King.

A disappointing field of 4 cars competed in round 2 of the CA vs OR Late Model Challenge Series.  Eric Gannon blazed to a 15.884 qualifying, with little brother Steven capturing the trophy dash.  The 30-lap main event was all Steven Gannon as he had the #75 Blaisdale Construction Chevrolet humping.   Behind him it was anyone’s game as Randy Houston, then Eric Gannon, and finally Bobby Hirschbock traded the secondary spot.  At the checker’s it was Steven Gannon, Hirschbock, Eric Gannon, and then Houston.

Multi-time Legends track champion Micah Parmer debuted a brand new car after destroying his previous mount in May.  Parmer wasted no time in alerting the competition he meant business by laying down a stout 17.712 in time trials.  Fast-developing Jeremy Doss garnered the trophy dash and jumped to an early lead in 30-lapper finale.   A frenzied battle between Mike Lovell, Tony Mangini, and Luis Tyrell kept Parmer at bay.  Action was slowed by a pair of Chase Madjic spins, which allowed the double up restarts to keep the field bunched up.  Lap 14 saw Tyrell being displaced for the lead by Parmer and the attractive #96 was guided right through to victory lane over Tyrell, Doss, Lovell, & Mangini.

NAPA Auto Parts Mini Stocks action saw Ol’Smoothie Dale Stelt with a clean sweep, picking up fast time honors with an 18.611, winning the four lap dash and the 25 lap main event over fast-coming Pete Smith, Ken Krause, Al Stelt, and Pete Smith III.

The BPT Carburetor Pro-4 Modifieds were on the front side of a two day show Saturday with Chris Straka earning fast time with a 17.253.  Vince Sanchez won the dash.  Early main event action saw Neo Nuno, Greg Van Cleave, and Kevin Barba pacing the field for the first third of the race.  Picking through the 13 car starting field was Straka and Mary Lewis.  At the checkers it was Straka, Lewis, Nuno, Van Cleave, and Curt Lewis fifth.

Sunday Afternoon action saw the Player’s Pizza Bombers take to the track with point leader Joe Bratolli turning a 19.488 in qualifying.  The potent #48 came back to win the dash as well.  David Dillinger Jr. won the first heat and Mike Hubert Jr. captured the second heat.   The main event started off with Brian Smith looking like he may be able to keep the #48 of Bratolli in check.  Suddenly nearing the halfway point Smith pulled to the infield while leading.  This opened up the door for Bratolli to earn another victory.  Second was Brian King, over Dillinger, Josh Dorman, and Jerry Green.

I-5 Tire Factory Hornet action saw Lori Weber win the first heat and the trophy dash.  Rookie title-contender Steve Hills won the second heat and copped his second main event win of the year over:  Chuck Knauer, Weber, John Johnson Jr., and Pete Smith.  The High School Challenge Series race was won by first-time competitor Justin Perkins driving the #5 Celica of Dustin Hills.

Day two of the BPT Pro-4 Mods saw Chris Straka again out-pace a good field of 13 cars.  Straka also took home the dash hardware.  Kevin “Fuzzy” Barba won the first heat and Vinnie Marcelli captured the second 8-lapper.  Main event action was All Neo Nuno early, but the field was halted three times for spins by Brian Murrell Jr.   Each time brought Straka closer to the front with Marty Lewis stalking him all the way.  As the lead duo took the white flag it was a drag race into turn three, coming to the home stretch with a final lunge was a very excited Marty Lewis who stole his first SRP win over Straka, Nuno, Barba, and Marty Plumb.

In the annual Father’s Day Massacre Demolition Derby it was legendary Shasta County oval track racer Jeff Rodgers besting a field of 12 others.

Great weather saw Bratolli continue is recent domination of the Bomber division.  The black #48 turn fast time with a 19.260 in qualifying, and captured the dash and heat.  In the first main event (a makeup for May 7th) it was David Dillinger Jr. pacing the first few circuits, then Jerry Green stormed to  lead over Brian King, Brian Smith, and James Sutton.  Several single car cautions kept the field grouped tightly and allowing Bratolli to make several restart passes.  Lap 18 saw King clip the spinning #71 of Sutton.  On the restart Bratolli used the entire front straightaway to pass Green on the outside and held off the striking #12 Camaro the rest of the way.  Finishing third was Smith over David Dillinger Jr, and John Johnson.

In the second 25-lapper, it was Brian Smith storming to an early lead, and pacing the field for the first half dozen circuits.  All along was Bratolli stalking and looking high and low.  At the checkers it was once again Bratolli this time over Smith, Green, Dillinger Jr., and Sutton.

06-11-11-143-ggg.jpg (66541 bytes)Saturday’s I-5 Tire Factory Hornet action saw the Hills Family hit the bonanza, son Dustin won the first heat, and father Steve captured the second heat.  Substituting father Grant Winegarden garnered the trophy dash in his son Don’s car.  Main event action was wild and wooly, with the father and son Hills team working their way to the front of the pack.  Dustin with the lead on the white flag had trouble negotiating the final circuit around lapped traffic with the result being his father Steve plowed by coming to the checkers.  Rounding out the top five were:  Dustin Hills, Pete Smith, Lori Weber, and Derek McAlister substituting for point leader Chuck Knauer.

Taylor Motors Modified action saw defending track champion Kyle Borden snap off a 16.620 in qualifying debuting his new brand new car.  Rookie JJ Dotzenrod held off the competition in his sharp #22 mod, and Guy Young captured the 8 lap heat race.  Main event action saw Young pounce to the front from an advantageous starting position, followed by Jon Vanderpool, Borden, and Dotzenrod.  On lap 13 Borden displaced Vanderpool with and outside pass exiting turn two.   Borden then started reeling in Young but came up for car lengths short during the non-stop 30-lapper.  It was great to see mending Stan Gunderson back at the track after a tough crash on May 14th.  Brian King did a fine job finishing on the lead lap in Gunderson’s familiar #64.

06-11-11-168gggg.jpg (57981 bytes)The next races will be in two weeks when SRP will be hosting the annual Shasta District Fair races on Saturday June 18th with the CA vs. OR Late Model Challenge Series, Taylor Motors Modifieds, BPT Carburetor Pro 4 Modifieds, Legends National Qualifier, and the NAPA Mini Stocks.  Sunday June 19th will be an encore of the BPT Carburetor Pro 4 Modifieds, Player’s Pizza Bombers, I-5 Tire Factory Hornets, High School Challenge Series, and a demolition derby. Adamson, Bratolli, Stelt, & Giles Star On Valero Night

By Rick Faeth

Saturday Night May 21st was Anderson Valero Night at Shasta Raceway Park, featuring the high-speed winged Supermodifieds, Player’s Pizza Bombers, NAPA Mini Stocks, I-5 Tire Factory Hornets, and round one of the High School Challenge Series.  Great weather and a good crowd saw a disappointing turnout for the supermodified car count total.  Ray Stebbins towed all the way from Kent, WA only to break in hot laps.  This left Lonnie Adamson in the familiar #98 S&S Motorsports entry, along with Bobby Dalton in Jim Birges’ #32, and Kyle Vanderpool  in Don Penix’s sharp #3.  Adamson was fast qualifier with a blistering 13.564, Dalton won the dash, the 10 lap heat was again Adamson.  At the 30-lap green Dalton took off like a missile and it appeared as if Adamson might have a serious challenger.  Dalton’s pink #32 paced the first ten laps before Adamson snuck by and inched away for the next 20 circuits.  The 30-lap feature was completed caution free in 7:08.

A nice sized field of 12 Player’s Pizza Bombers saw Bratolli turn fast time with a 19.391, and Mike Hubert Jr. cop the dash.  James Sutton won the first heat, and Hubert the second.  The main event was one of the best in recent history.  A full invert found the SRP patrons on the edge of their seat.  The first 15 laps were slowed only by a couple of quick cautions for back of the pack spins with no damage sustained.  David Dillinger Jr. paced the early laps going backwards.  Third through seventh were trading positions feverishly between Hubert, Josh Dorman, Brian Smith and Sutton.  Up front it was Jerry Greene displacing Dillinger.  At the 15-lap turn around it was Hubert nipping past Greene on lap 18.  The second 15-lap segment went caution free with Bratolli emerging from the pack and passing Hubert cleanly on lap 27 for the win.  Third was newcomer Jerry Greene with an outstanding effort.   Fourth was Brian Smith, with Sutton fifth.

For the second week in a row there was a good crop of NAPA Auto Parts Mini Stocks.  Multi-time track champ Dale Stelt garnered quick time withan 18.   Scotty Murphy captured the trophy, and Ken Krause and Dale Stelt won the heats.   The feature got off to a bad start with Pete Smith, Bob Garrett, and Gary Mangels making contact and eliminating all three from action.  After that it was a battle royale between Stelt and Murphy for the next 22 laps.  With 7 to go Al Stelt looped in turn two putting Murphy outside of Dale Stelt for the restart.  The low-groove liking Murphy found the high-line a tick slower and the well-prepped #6 of Stelt crossed the checkers first over, Murphy, Al Stelt, Krause, and Doug Winegarden.

I-5 Tire Factory Hornet action saw rookie Wanda Ash of Orland win her second heat race in as many weeks, birthday boy Gary Stankey captured the other heat and the trophy dash. The 15-lap feature saw 13 cars take the green.  Fast and tight quarters racing found young Dalton Giles pacing the field while Chuck Knauer and Dustin Hills started moving through the pack.  Lori Weber substituting in the #33 car also moved forward from her rear starting spot.   On lap 9 coming out of the front straightaway chicane heavy contact was made between Hill, Stankey and Mr. Wall necessitating a red-flag.   The final six laps saw excitable rookie Scott Bigley inch by Giles and hold on for the win.  Third was another young and impressive rookie Preston Stankey, fourth was Knauer, fifth was Weber.

The first event of the evening was round one of the High School Challenges Series.  Two junior high competitors squared off with four high schooler’s in what many thought would be a cake walk for veteran John ‘Hot Rod’ Johnson Jr.  Not to be however as 13-year old Dalton Giles in his patriotic #7x held off the veteran for the 12-lap distance.  Third was David Felch, over Preston Stankey, and Justin Costa.

The next races will be in two weeks when SRP will be hosting Monster Trucks, Twin Bomber  Races, and a Bus Race on Friday June 10th, followed by an encore of Monster Trucks, Hornets, Modifeds, and a Bus Race on Saturday June 11th.  For times and ticket information please go to the SRP website at www.shastaracewaypark.net

Saturday Night May 14th was John Lambirth Trucking Night at Shasta Raceway Park, featuring the 4th Annual Craig Brown Memorial 50-Lap Modified Race which coincided with the second round of the new Tri Track Challenge Modified Tour. A total of 19 sleek mods were present under threatening skies. The event got off to a sour note when likeable SRP veteran Stan Gunderson had a carburetor malfunction causing his throttle to stick. The #64 car veered into the tractor tire in turn one and vaulted over it, continuing out the pit exit gate and finally coming to rest in the pit area behind the turn two bleachers. Gunderson was awake and alert but was transported for observation to a local hospital. Guy Young battling the flu was the fastest qualifier at a stout 16.343. Rich Lindgren in the Firehouse Racing entry copped the four lap dash. In qualifier action it was Ukiah Speedway’s Dustin DeRosier first to the checkers in the fast heat and Klammath Falls, Oregon’s Rich Cobb dominating in the slow heat. A fortuitous 4 pill invert drawn by DeRosier put veteran Young on the pole for the 50-lapper. The full field took the green and went clean for the first 20 laps. A single car spin for rookie Tim Heisler was the first caution on lap 20. On lap 28 there was a four car scrum toward the rear of the pack with Cobb, DeRosier, and Darin Knight getting the worst of it. The next 22 laps were all green flag racing with Philpott passing Young on the outside with 10 to go. Dicey racing was seen from Randy Houston, Thomas Wright, and rookie JJ Dotzenrod making up multiple positions in the last dozen laps. At the checkers it was an ecstatic Jason Philpott garnering his first ever SRP win over the 5-time champion Young, Houston was third over Lindgren, and defending track champion Kyle Borden.

The first 2011 Street Stock Spectacular Event was shaping up to be a battle of local area engine builders. Fan favorite Brian King’s beautiful #9 was fast qualifier. Joe Bratolli edged King in the dash. King came back to capture the heat and the field was set for a 30-lap exciting duel. All was for naught though as Bratolli experienced distributor gremlins and exited the track on lap 10. This paved the way for King to easily stroll to victory over Dave Capelli’s sharp Monte Carlo, James Sutton, and Steve Hagstrom.

NAPA Auto Parts Mini Stock action saw a good field of 10 cars sign in. Al Stelt lost a motor in practice. Brother Dale out-paced the remaining nine cars. From there on it was the Scotty Murphy show with the fan-favorite besting all others in the dash heat and main event. Chasing the low-line groove running #77 of Murphy was newcomer Tracy Martenson, returning 2008 champ Ken Krause, Doug Winegarden, and Peter Smith III.

I-5 Tire Factory Hornet action saw rookie Wanda Ash of Orland win her first heat race, and sophomore driver Gary Stankey capture the second heat. Another fast rookie Dustin Hills of Anderson won the dash. The 15-lap feature saw a good field of 13 cars take the green. Fifth starting Lori Weber launched into pass mode and quickly picked up three spots. Spirited racing throughout the pack saw Don Winegarden leading at the ten lap mark. On lap 11 Weber made her move on Winegarden entering turn three. Steve Hills then displaced Winegarden on the next circuit and rapidly closed on Weber. At the checkers it was a popular first win for the local second-year chauffer Weber over rookie Steve Hills, Scott Bigby, Dalton Giles, and Chuck Knauer.

Shasta Raceway Park's staff, competitors, and patrons are saddened to hear of the passing of Brian Koski

Brian drove his familiar #5 Late Model at Altamont, Stockton 99, Roseville, SRP, Las Vegas, and other paved tracks all over the west.  He was the 2008 Westcar Champion and competed at SRP in the late model division during the 2009 season.  He was a devoted short track racer and will certainly be missed.  Thoughts and prayers to his family during this difficult time.

Houston Corrals Round One of Late Models Series on Mike’s Body Shop Night

                                                                       By Rick Faeth

Saturday Night April 9 was Mike’s Body Shop Night at Shasta Raceway Park, featuring the inaugural Heritage Cattle Company Event of the new CA vs. OR Late Model Challenge Series co-sanctioned by Shasta Raceway Park and the Pacific Racing Association operators of Douglas County Speedway in Roseburg, OR.  A pleasant spring evening and a good crowd saw a field of 12 Late Models, the Napa Auto Parts Mini Stocks, BPT Carburetor Pro-4 Modifieds, I-5 Tire Factory Hornets, and the young season’s second bus race.

Qualifying for the Late Models saw Medford, Oregon resident Randy Houston picking up quick time with a sizzling 15.807 and winning the six-car, six-lap trophy dash.  Other trophy dash winners were veteran Dale Stelt in his potent #6 VW Mini Stock, Greg Van Cleave in his sharp looking #13 Pro-4 Modified, and Terry Keluchie captured the all-female Hornet dash.

Hornet heat race action saw rookie's Steve Hills take heat one and son Dustin Hills smoke the field in heat two.  The 20-lap main event finishing backwards saw three cars blanketing the finish with the result of Terry Keluchie ending up on her lid, but okay.  Steve Hills earned his first victory in just his second race over Dustin Hills, Chuck Knauer, Lori Weber, and Wendy Oliver-Smith.
Scott Murphy turned an 18.765 to out-pace the Napa Mini Stock field, and Dale Stelt narrowly defeated the 2010 champion Murphy in the heat race action.   The 25-lap main event was all Dale Stelt, the race for 2nd was swapped several times ending with Murphy the runner up over Pete Smith III, Al Stelt and the visiting Craig Baker from Redwood Acres Raceway.

Van Cleave’s 17.088 was fast time for the always exciting Pro-4 Mods, the #13 from Santa Rosa also copped the heat race, and was looking for clean sweep on the night.  The main event saw a tight grouping of the top four with excellent side-by side racing between Curt Lewis on the low groove, Neo Nuno on the high side and Van Cleave lurking right on their rear bumpers.  Lap after lap the trio was inching closer together without touching.  Coming off of turn four to the checkers Lewis’ mount got a bit loose and washed up the track just a tad and this allowed Neo Nuno to capture his first of what will surely be many feature wins.  Chasing Nuno to the line was Lewis, Van Cleave, and Kevin Barba.

The CA vs. OR Late Model feature started with a 6 invert and Riley Watson on the pole, early action saw Watson, David Miller, and Randy Houston vying for the top spot, at lap 20 Houston stepped to the outside and made two text book passes to take the lead.  A caution for David Dillinger Jr. was the only serious mishap of the night and the final half of the race was caution free.  Randy Houston expertly negotiated lapped traffic to earn his first victory of the new season by 3 seconds over Watson, Anthony Pope, Alan Cress, and Mike George.  Round two of the northwest’s newest late model series will be Saturday, June 18 during the Shasta District Fair.

The next race will be April 23rd when SRP will be hosting the United States Auto Club Western Classic Sprint Cars, USAC Ford Focus Midgets, Player’s Pizza Bombers, Napa Mini Stocks, and the I-5 Tire Factory Hornets.  For times and ticket information please go to the SRP website at www.shastaracewaypark.net

Player’s Pizza Opening Night Triumph’s to Nichols, Young, Brattoli
                                                                         By Rick Faeth

Saturday Night April 2 was Player’s Pizza Opening Night at Shasta Raceway Park, featuring the BCRA Midgets, Vintage Midgets, Taylor Motors Modifieds, Player’s Pizza Bombers, and the I-5 Tire Factory Hornets.

A good crowd braved a cold and breezy evening when the sun went down.   Qualifying for BCRA saw Chad Nichols picking up quick time with a dazzling 15.111.  Young Nick Chivello copped the trophy dash.  Nichols and Chivello were the heat winners.  After a couple of false starts the midget main went flag-to-flag thirty laps of green flag racing with many exciting passes by the visiting Travis Berryhill, Chivello, Nichols, and Nick Foster Jr.  Holding off the field for his fourth midget main event win in a row at SRP was the San Carlos native, Chad Nichols over Berryhill, Chivello, Foster, and Dillon Silverman.

The Taylor Motors Modified qualifying saw Guy young pacing the field with a 16.322.  2010 Champ Kyle Borden won the 4-lap trophy dash, with Young picking up the heat win.  The main saw only one brief yellow which allowed Young to close up a gap on the lead car of Borden.  Going back to green, Young stepped to the outside to make the winning pass with the 39x gunning at his rear bumper the remainder of the way.  At the Adam Boddy checkers it was the five-time champ Young over his rival Borden by 2 seconds, Jon Vanderpool was third over Roger Lorenzini Jr., and Stan Gunderson.

The new Player’s Pizza Bomber Division saw Joe Bratolli notch an opening night clean sweep by setting fast time, garnering the trophy dash, heat, & main event trophies.   Unfortunately newcomer Jerry Green Jr. and Mike Hubert Jr. were eliminated in early action.  Bratolli led Brian Smith, Chris Michael, and Jon Johnson Jr. the 30-lap checkers.

A nice field of I-5 Tire Factory Hornets with many new and fresh faces took to the 3/8th’s mile oval.  With Pete Smith wining the dash, Steve Hills and Chris Van Eyck capturing the heats and Sophomore driver Gary Stankey winning  his first main event of the year over a good field of 4-cylinder bangers.  Following Stankey to the line after 15 laps was Van Eyck, rookie Chuck Knauer, Terry Keluchie, and Grant Winegarden.

The next race will be April 9th when SRP will be hosting the inaugural CA vs. OR Late Model Challenge Series along with the BPT Carburetor Pro-4 Modifieds, SRP Legends, Napa Mini Stocks, and the I-5 Tire Factory Hornets.  For times and ticket information please go to the SRP website at www.shastaracewaypark.net

Dillinger Smashes Pumpkins on Valero Enduro Night

                              By Rick Faeth

Saturday Night November 6th was Valero Anderson Night at Shasta Raceway Park and marked the final night of racing at the 3/8-mile oval.  22 of the West Coast Enduro’s finest pilots signed in for the 200-lap festival of fun.

Pleasant fall weather and a good crowd on hand saw Ken Winland of Santa Clara take the early lead.  Winland a long-time Enduro veteran was displaced by the #44 of Rick Bentz 20 laps in.  Coming from mid pack and threading his way to the front on the pumpkin strewn and soaped track was Anderson’s own David Dillinger Jr.  The second generation racer debuted his sharp looking brand new #30 Chevelle.  By lap 60 Dillinger had seized the lead after a rash of incidents that took out favorites David Pabst Jr., Duane Hoffman, and Alvin Bell.  At the 100-lap turn around it was looking good for the locals.  The second 100-lap portion saw Dillinger extend his lead to several laps over #7 Chris Lancaster.  At the checkered flag it was a very popular hometown win for young Dillinger with a lap on Lancaster, and five on Bentz.  Winland came home fourth, Jerry Shaha fifth, Ron Wills sixth.  Rounding out the top ten were David Dillinger Sr, Gene Guinn, Steve Haudenshild, and Roger Lee.

The 60-lap four cylinder enduro was a true suds burner.  Ten cars saw green flag fly with Pete Smith Sr. getting the initial jump.  However veteran Toyota Paseo driver Dave Ski and Pete Smith III entered the fray to do battle as well.  At the 30-lap turn around mark it was anyone’s race as John Johnson Jr. started to pick off cars.  The final few laps were a see saw battle between Ski and the younger Smith.  With Adam Boddy’s checkers in the air it was 2010 Napa Mini Stock Rookie of the Year Pete Smith III over Ski and Johnson who were all on the same lap.  Wendy Oliver and Gary Mangels rounded out the top five.

Shawna Rule defeated Steve Joseph’s girlfriend Tammy and Edith Jones in the ten-lap, six car powder puff race.  SRP first responder Craig Warren continued his winning ways in the first ever Bus/Boat Race.

Faeth Motorsports, Inc. tentatively plans to kick off the 2011 season on Saturday, April 2nd Please check the track website for updates throughout the winter at www.shastaracewaypark.net

Doss, Winters, King, Capture Win River 125 Open Show

                                                            By Rick Faeth

This past Friday, Saturday, and Sunday saw great weather and good car counts for Shasta Raceway Park’s annual fall open show.  For the first time in three years Win River Casino was back returning to their long-time lead sponsorship role.

Friday, saw the pits fill up early for the practice day and with no incidents the weekend was off to a good clean start.  Step It Up Motorcycle Stunt Team performed first Friday evening, while Dave Lewallen out qualified the bomber field.  All American Speedway’s potent #77 Erick Ray held off SRP’s 2010 Bomber champion in both the trophy dash and the non-stop 30 lap feature.  Howard Hammers paced the legends field, while Buddy Cox captured the trophy dash and Micah Parmer garnered yet another main event.  The legends race marked the debut of 13-year old Jeremy Doss in the sharp looking #7j car.  Mike Doss was content helping his son without a late model ride for the weekend due to engine woes the previous week at Redwood Acres.

Saturday found the #15 car of Mike Lovell arrive for Doss to drive only have mechanical gremlins strike immediately.  With a lack of spare parts available, enter fellow Late Model driver Junior Roddy to the equation.  Junior flew his plane from Redding to Upper Lake and retrieved the needed replacement parts to get the #15 back on track.

Meanwhile a stellar field of 28 modifieds held court over SRP.    Former Redding hometowner Scott Winters out-qualified the field with a 16.411.  All American Speedway veteran Jason Philpot took the trophy dash honors, Richie Potts was victorious in the first 20-lap qualifier, Idaho’s Shelby Strobel in the second, and SRP’s own Jon Vanderpool captured the third.
In late model action a total of 18 cars timed in with Kyle Cattanach besting the field with a fast 15.830.  Crowd favorite Eric Gannon won the 4-lap dash, with Eric Graham winning the first qualifier and in his 24th appearance at the SRP Open Show Canada’s Darrell Midgely copped the second 20-lapper.

Bomber action saw Rich ‘Fireball” Oller earn fast time and Lakeport’s potent #69p of Charlie Collins win the dash and 15-lap qualifier event.   The Northern California Pro-4 Modifieds competed Saturday with Cody Barba picking up fast time, and fast youngster Kyle Tellstrom dominating the competition in both the dash and non-stop 30-lapper.

Sunday’s finale saw some of the same results but also netted some surprises.  No shock to the system was the 60-lap modified win by Tracy’s, Mr. Modified, Scott Winters.  Starting fourth in the 24-car field Winters displaced Rich Lindgren on lap 11 and never surrendered the lead.  Only a few brief cautions delayed the outcome as Winters has captured his third eagle trophy in as many years.  Chasing the sharp, well-prepped #24 to the checkers was Redding’s Guy Young, Jason Philpot with a last lap pass for third, Lindgren, and Scott Woessner.

Shasta Lake City’s Brian King duplicated Winter’s efforts with a repeat performance in bomber action as he held off Dave Lewallen, Charlie Collins, Brian Smith, and Matt Camp in the 40-lap event.  The I-5 Tire Factory Hornet portion of the Open Show Weekend went to John “Hot Rod” Johnson Jr. who held off Gary Stankey, and 2010 champ Ed Pulfer to win his first career Hornet feature.

The start of the Win River 125 saw the 18-car field get away smoothly, Eric Gannon established himself as all drivers marked time by clicking off laps.   Early favorite Steven Gannon exited with brake problems.  The race was smooth to the half way point when after a caution period defending champion Randy Houston masterfully displaced Gannon for the lead.  The next 30 laps were ‘jockey’ time as many fast favorites were through saving tires and shifted into full race mode.  Kyle Cattanach, Howard Ford, and Mike Doss started the charge to the front.  An extended caution for the #90 of Trevor Christiani allowed the field to bunch up behind the #9 veteran from Cottonwood who calls Medford, OR home now.  With 20 to go after the restart it became evident that Cattanach and Doss were the fastest cars on the track.  Howard Ford and Cattanach bumped with the #20 cow car spinning, eliminating his chance for victory.  In just a few more circuits the #15 of Mike Doss passed Houston entering turn three on the outside and completed it on the next lap exiting turn two.  With ten to go David Miller and Eric Graham hit the ‘go’ button.  At the finish it was Mike Doss winning at SRP for the first time over Cattanach, Houston, Miller, Graham, Ford, Midgely, David Braund, Victor Pfluger, and Brandon Carlson.  It was an emotional victory lane celebration for Doss who started the weekend without a ride.  Kudos were given to Lovell, Roddy, crew chief Dale Dodd, and son Jeremy for making the win possible.

SRP’s next race will be November 6th when we will be hosting our second Eve of Destruction.  On tap is a 150-lap V8 Enduro, 60-lap four cylinder Enduro, powder puff, roll-over, the first ever bus/boat race and bus jump over a motorhome.  For times and ticket information please go to the SRP website at www.shastaracewaypark.net

Les Schwab Championship Night Crowns 2010 Titlists

                                                  By Rick Faeth

Saturday Night September 4th was Les Schwab Championship Night at Shasta Raceway Park, featuring the Taylor Motors Modifieds, Les Schwab Bombers, Napa Mini Stocks, I-5 Tire Factory Hornets, and the final High School Challenge Series Event.

Short-sleeve weather and a fine crowd saw Kyle Borden trip the scoring loop with a fast 16.344 in Taylor Motors Modified qualifying.  Guy Young copped the trophy dash, and long-time veteran Stan Gunderson captured the heat race.   Borden starting at the rear based on the inversion and wasted no time stepping to the outside to make several key passes.  This prompted Young to follow suit.  Mid race action saw a bumper to bumper battle between Gunderson, Devin LaHorgue, and Randy Houston.   With ten to go Borden cleared the previous trio and set his sights on the leader Young.  With two to go Young’s engine started losing power.  Coming to the white and the checkers there were sparks flying between the top two rivals with Young barely holding of Borden who garnered his first SRP Taylor Motors Modified Championship.  Following the top two were: Devin LaHorgue, Randy Houston, and Kelly Peacock.

The Les Schwab Bomber Division saw a good field of cars vying for the coveted perennial Pepsi Trophy.  Brian King outpaced the group with an 18.882 and the trophy dash was won by Rich “Fireball” Oller.  The entire field of dash combatants timed in less than 0.100 seconds of each other.  Josh Dorman and Chris Michaels were heat race winners.  The feature started off with the #37 of Chris Michaels exploding to an enormous lead going clockwise.  At the turn around on lap 15 the battle was Michael, Oller, Dorman, Dave Lewallen, King, and Randy Riggins.  Overcoming a season of bad luck Rich Oller wrestled the #6b of Ken Buman to the lead and withstood several yellows and as well as the valiant charge of Brian King,  third was Lewallen who wrapped up the 2010 SRP Bomber Championship, fourth was Michaels, and Randy Riggins was fifth.  Josh Dorman was transported to a local hospital for observation after tremendous wall impact early in the event.

The closest point battle all year long was fought out in the Napa Mini Stock Division.  Rookie Pete Smith III led the chase all season long however lurking right behind was long-time veteran and fan favorite Scott Murphy.  Dale Stelt set fast time, won the heat, and took home the big Pepsi Trophy for the second year in a row.    Pete Smith III entered the event one point ahead of Murphy and ended the night one point behind.  Murphy, the Anderson native never had the points lead this year until the final checkered flag fell.

The I-5 Tire Factory Hornets action saw Lori Weber victorious in the dash, and Terry Keluchie and Ed Pulfer pick up heat wins.  The main event saw fast developing rookie Keluchie masterfully negotiate her #8 car to her first career win in the 15 lapper over Weber and Wendy Oliver.  The evening’s first event saw Cottonwood’s Matt Chain representing West Valley High School in not only winning the High School Challenge Series Race but also the first annual HSCS championship by only four points over Central Valley’s John “Hot Rod” Johnson Jr.

The next race will be September 25th when SRP will be hosting the 7th Annual Pop Porter Memorial featuring the BCRA Midgets, Vintage Midgets, WSRA Baby Grand & Mini Cup Cars, Street Stock Spectacular Race and at the end of the night, the School Bus 300.   For times and ticket information please go to the SRP website at www.shastaracewaypark.net

The 2010 BPT Performance Carburetor sponsored Northern California Pro 4 Modified Point Series has concluded its 5-race point season at Northern California's premier 3/8th's mile paved oval.  The fast, attractive, family campaigned #34 of Jake Tillman takes top honors this year over rookie sensation Kyle Tellstrom and veteran, as well as, series promoter Kevin Barba.  The five races saw four different winners with Tellstrom winning the opener on April 10th, followed by veteran Greg Van Cleave on May 1st. Champion Tillman registered a clean sweep on fair night by outqualifying the field, copping the dash and the 30-lap feature.  Tellstrom also did the unthinkable of accomplishing clean sweep honors on August 7th.  This is the second year that the Pro 4 Modifieds have been spsonsored by BPT Carburetors and the class has become a dependable, exciting, and fan friendly class at SRP.  Plans are being made for the once-a-month return of this fine, developing traveling series in 2011.  For the first time in history the Pro 4 Mods will be included in the Win River Fall Open Show at SRP.  Great job Jake!

 First Time Modified Pilot Prevails

                                                 By Rick Faeth

Saturday Night August 7th was North Valley Bank Night at Shasta Raceway Park, featuring the Taylor Motors Modifieds, BPT Carburetor Pro-4 Modifieds, INEX U.S. Legends National Qualifier, Les Schwab Bombers, I-5 Tire Factory Hornets, and a boat race at the end of the evening.

A good crowd anticipated the Taylor Motors Modifieds as four All American Speedway regulars made a visit to the 3/8th-mile jewel of the north state.  Jon Vanderpool paced the 12-car field with a stellar 16.441, and point leader Kyle Borden captured the four-lap trophy dash.  Eric Humphries making his debut in the sharp looking #57 Mike Garcia racing entry normally piloted by veteran Wes Miller copped the first heat race, with Anderson’s Eddie Burris topping the second eight-lapper.  The 30-lap main event got off smoothly with the #57 of Humphries storming to the lead from his front row starting position over Jason Bamberg, Devin LaHorgue, and Mike Regalman.   From the back row starting position Borden started picking off cars.  As darkness set in and track temps cooled the outside groove opened up for the #39x.    A lap five caution for a Stan Gunderson spin was the only hiccup in action as the bulk of the field was turning consistent 16.6 laps in the main event.    At the black and white markers it was first-time SRP competitor and first-time modified starter Humphries in the well-prepared, black #57 garnering the win over a fast-closing Borden, Bamberg was third over LaHorgue, and Regalman.  Second place point man Guy Young competed in a Lucas Oil Modified Event at Irwindale Speedway which propelled LaHorgue, Vanderpool, and Mike Wright past him in the season point’s chase.

The BPT Carburetor Pro-4 Mods had another good turnout with 15 year old phenom Kyle Tellstrom out-pacing the field with a 17.294, charging to the trophy dash, and heat race win as well as the 25-lap finale.  Chasing Tellstrom to the line was Jake Tillman, Neo Nuno, heat-race winner Greg Van Cleve, and Kevin “Fuzzy” Barba.  This exciting series will be part of the Win River Fall Open Show for the first time.

A less than stellar car count for the INEX U.S. Legends Cars National Qualifier was more than made up for by stellar racing, with four-time track champion Micah Parmer narrowly defeating Howard Hammers in the 25-lap main event.    Hammers was the trophy dash and heat race victor.  Chasing the two front runners in the main event was:  Buddy Cox, impressive 13-year old Young Lion Luis Tyrrell, veteran Bob Kuebler, and rookie Bob McLeod.

Whatever Brian King climbs into this year he seems to find victory lane.  Not running for points in the Les Schwab Bomber Series has allowed him to go for wins and win he did, breaking the recent Josh Dorman streak.  Rich “Fireball” Oller timed in quickest, with King and Brian Smith winning heats.   The dash was captured by point leader Dave Lewallen who’s #48 expired during the heat race sending him scrambling to find a substitute ride.  Dorman having the season of his life was second in the main over Wayne Lowe, Chris Michael, and Chester Brown.

The I-5 Tire Factory Hornets saw Cottonwood’s Chris Van Eyke win the dash, heat, and main event in future father-in-law Pete Smith’s #44 car.   Gary Stankey captured heat #2.  Following Van Eyke to the feature finish was future wife Cheree Smith, Lori Weber, Stankey, and Barb Bruner.

At evenings end it was veteran boat race competitor David Agee from McArthur taking top honors for the first time.  The next race will be August 28th when SRP will be hosting the Airport Auto Brokers Late Model Series, Taylor Motors Modifieds, Napa Mini Stocks, I-5 Tire Factory Hornets, and a bus/boat race at the end of the night.  For times and ticket information please go to the SRP website at www.shastaracewaypark.net

                                                     King Captures Street Stock Crown

July 17th was the hottest day of 2010 thus far and that same adjective could describe Brian King’s efforts in the first Street Stock Spectacular event of the season.  111 degree temperatures scorched Shasta Raceway Park making for a slick track on Paint Mart Night which featured the first of two 2010 Street Stock events, along with the BPT Pro-4 Modifieds, Napa Mini Stocks, I-5 Tire Factory Hornets, and the first ever SRP Bus Race.

King the 2009 Les Schwab Bomber Champion debuted his ultra-sharp looking street stock that looked fast just sitting in the pits.  Joe Bratolli was the street stock fast qualifier and King’s main threat all evening, finishing second to the blue #9 in the dash, heat and non-stop 25-lap main event.  King wasted no time getting to the front displacing David Dillinger Jr. on lap 4.  Bratolli stalked King the entire distance waiting to pounce if a mistake was made.  King captured his first street stock spectacular win over Bratolli’s well-prepped #39 Camaro, an impressive third place podium finish was earned by Jerry Shaha, followed by Ken Buman in his own #6b, with Danny Ide fifth.

The always exciting Pro-4 Mods lived up to their billing with different drivers wining every event.  Young Kyle Tellstrom was fast qualifier, Jake Tillman garnered the trophy dash,  Brett Lahorgue heat one, and Kevin Barba heat 2.  The main event looked early like it could be rookie LaHorgue’s to lose, however a debris caution erased his early lead, this moved Tellstrom to the point where he looked dominant,  a lap 25 caution saw Tillman and Barba swap ends due to Tillman’s car venting fluids.  At the checkered flag it was #87 Curt Lewis who was in 6th position at the lap 25 caution taking the win over, Neo Nuno, Tillman, Barba, and fast developing rookie Timber Cookson.

The Napa Mini stocks saw Dale Stelt out-pace the field, brother Al pick up the dash win, and Scott Murphy win the heat.  Main event action saw a torrid battle between the #6 VW of Dale Stelt and the #77 Datsun of Murphy.  Both competitors clicking of almost duplicate lap times.  Murphy was able to work his patented low groove to victory lane over, Dale Stelt, Mike Wright who was subbing for point leader Pete Smith III, Keith LaHue was fourth, and Al Stelt fifth.

I-5 Tire Factory Hornet action saw #73 Lori Weber capture the win in the all-female trophy dash.  John ‘Hot Rod’ Johnson captured the heat race win, and point leader Ed Pulfer meticulously notched another main event trophy from the rest of the field.  Chasing Cottonwood’s Pulfer to the line were rookies Gary Stankey and Weber.  Fourth was Johnson over another rookie Matt Chain.

The evening ended with a ten-lap, four bus race with early leader Brian King getting snookered by Lynn Herried, Jerry Shaha, and George Goober who all took a detour through the infield to rob King of his second win of the night.

The next race will be August 7th when SRP will be hosting a Legends INEX National Qualifier, along with the Taylor Motors Modifieds, BPT Carburetor Pro-4 Modifieds, Les Schwab Bombers, I-5 Tire Factory Hornets, and a bus race at the end of the night.  For times and ticket information please go to the SRP website at www.shastaracewaypark.net

Fireworks Explode Overhead, Action Explodes On Track
By Rick Faeth

Temperatures that topped out at 94 degrees made racers and fans comfortable on the annual July 3rd Metro PCS - Anderson Explodes Fireworks Night.  A packed grandstand witnessed four divisions highlight the evening with the BCRA Midgets, Taylor Motors Modifieds, Les Schwab Bombers, and I-5 Tire Factory Hornets featured
Colma’s second generation midget driver Chad Nichols wasted no time establishing why he is one of the finest pavement midget drivers in the nation picking up right where he left off in April, as he bested the BCRA contingent with a ‘clean sweep’ for the second straight time.   Chad and the well established family run team were the fast qualifiers, trophy dash and heat race winners, and were chased to the 30-lap win by BCRA points leader Nick Foster Jr., Rick Faeth, Jonathon Foster, Guy Young, and Floyd Alvis.
Cottonwood’s ‘Bad Boy’ Kyle Borden continues his meticulous drive towards the season point’s championship by capturing his fourth modified win of the season.  Double-duty driving Guy Young was the quickest qualifier, while recently married Devin LaHorgue captured the trophy dash.  Fast Eddie Burris and Borden garnered the heats.  The start of the 30-lap feature saw lots of full-pack action with Burris out front early.  Mid-race saw Borden looking high and low for shot at the lead, ultimately displacing Burris on the high side.   Spirited, three-wide action on the back straightaway between LaHorgue, Jon Vanderpool, Stan Gunderson, Mike Wright, and Young had the fans screaming with approval.  Late race action saw Borden increase his lead substantially at the finish over Burris, Roger Lorenzini Jr. was third, steady Mike Wright fourth, and Young fifth.
If it can be said that Dave Lewallen was the early season Les Schwab Bomber Series dominant driver, then Josh Dorman is currently the mid-season one.  The well-prepared #29 Monte Carlo, was third quickest in time trials, won the trophy dash, heat race, and bested Lewallen, and 2009 Bomber Division Champ Brian King in a thrilling three-car breakaway at the end of the main event.  James Sutton charged home fourth and Duane Hoffman fifth.
I-5 Tire Factory action saw first year competitor Gary Stankey make it two in a row, first on Fair Night and then backing it up on Fireworks Night.  The colorful #88 of Stankey also captured a heat race win.  Barb Bruner in the #29 Smith Family Racing Team had another successful night highlighted by a heat win and a runner-up performance in the feature.  Pete Smith was third over Wendy Oliver fourth, and Lori Weber in fifth.   Rookie Matt Chain won his first trophy dash and John ‘Hot Rod’ Johnson stormed to victory in the third High School Challenge Series Event of 2010.
SRP will be hosting a Legends INEX National Qualifier, along with the Taylor Motors Modifieds, BPT Carburetor Pro-4 Modifieds, Les Schwab Bombers, and the I-5 Tire Factory Hornets.  For times and ticket information please go to the SRP website at www.shastaracewaypark.net

Shasta District Fair Features Thrilling Races
By Rick Faeth
Mild temperatures in the 80’s saw full grandstands during both Saturday and Sunday of the annual Shasta District Fair Races.  Five Division's on Taylor Motors Night, Saturday saw long-time late model campaigner David Miller make the tow from Medford, Oregon to capture the 40-lap Sonic Late Model Main Event dethroning the recent victory streak of Randy “The Rocket” Houston.  Houston was everyone’s pick to cop another feature win after out qualifying the field and capturing the trophy dash.  Miller suffered an early race spin and could be found searching for the fast line as he meticulously made his way back through the pack.  With seven laps to go and Houston’s tires beginning to show wear, Miller made the winning pass much to the delight of the cheering crowd.  Chasing Miller and Houston to the line were Mike Doss, Laytonville’s Corey James, and defending Sonic Late Model Champ Eric Gannon.
The Taylor Motor’s Modifieds featured a lap one complete restart and then a non-stop 30-lap dazzler.  The Cottonwood Comet and current point leader Kyle Borden starting deep in the field charged to the front and had a multi-lap battle with #26 Jon Vanderpool.  Borden cleared Vanderpool with 8 laps to go on the outside to capture his third main event of the season.  Following Borden to the checkers was defending champ Guy Young, Vanderpool, Devin LaHorgue, and Stan Gunderson.  Former track champion Kelly Peacock made his 2010 debut as well as Anderson’s own Eddie Burris in the family owned #4b.  Borden blistered the 3/8ths mile oval in a time of 16.284 to out-pace the field, while soon to be married Devin LaHorgue took the trophy dash honors.
The fan favorite BPT Carburetor Pro-4 Modifieds saw a good field of 11 cars time in and Cobb, CA’s own Jake Tillman annihilate the competition via a ‘clean sweep’ taking fast time honors, winning the six lap, six car dash, and the 30 lap main event.   Tillman’s sharp looking #34 was followed to the line by Greg Van Cleave, Kevin Barba, Chuck LaHorgue subbing for son Brett, and Curt Lewis.
The largest field of Les Schwab Bombers appeared in three years, with 16 cars practicing and 15 timing in.  Josh Dorman was the fast qualifier and Rich “Fireball” Oller took home the trophy dash.  The 30-lap feature starting clockwise saw Randy Riggins jump to an early lead followed closely by David Dillinger Jr.,  Chris Michael, and James Sutton.  Spirited passing and battling existed throughout the feature with Dorman, Dave Lewallen, Dillinger, and Brian King making their way through traffic.  With ten to go Dorman stormed to the point and held off the pressure to capture his second straight Bomber win.  Following the #29 Monte Carlo to the finish was defending champion Brian King, Lewallen, Dillinger, and Riggins.
The Napa Mini Stocks saw some of the best racing of the evening.  With Dale Stelt narrowly clipping Pete Smith III for the trophy dash win while Al Stelt and Scott Murphy were getting together exiting turn two.  The older Stelt brother in his well prepped #6 VW Bug treated the fans to a command performance in the main event, again barely eclipsing the #31 of the fast-improving rookie point leader Smith.

On Sunday Afternoon the Great Father’s Day Massacre Demolition Derby saw a fine field of 15 cars bash each other into smithereens.  Esparto’s Russel Hatanaka was the last man standing and took home the $1200 top prize over Lewie Bambour, Will Fish, Rich Lyon, and Todd Johnson.  The High school Challenge Series Race was won by John “Hot Rod” Johnson over a rapidly improving Matt Chain.  The Regular I-5 Tire Factory Hornet event was captured by surprise rookie sensation Gary Stankey over “Hot Rod” Johnson and Pete Smith.  Former Legends car racer Brian Kaminsky won the very first ever lawn mower race at Shasta Raceway Park.  The next event at SRP will be the July 3rd Metro PCS Fireworks Night featuring the BCRA Midgets, Taylor Motors Modifieds, Les Schwab Bombers, and the I-5 Tire Factory Hornets.  For times and ticket information please go to the SRP website at www.shastaracewaypark.net

The Cottonwood Comet Cops Second Modified Victory
By Rick Faeth

An unseasonable mild Memorial Day Weekend welcomed the SRP fans and Taylor Motors Modified competitors on Saturday Night, May 29th.  Action was on the front side of the annual two-day California Vintage Nationals and saw Cottonwood’s #39x Kyle Borden pace the field by 0.020 of a second over defending track champion Guy Young.    The sharp looking #26 MVS Motorsports car guided by Jon Vanderpool collected the trophy dash win, with Mike Wright and Borden victorious in the eight lap heat races.  The evening marked the debut of the #89 modified owned by Ken Buman and piloted by Rich “Fireball” Oller.

Main event action on the first lap saw a scrum on the back straight away that damaged the back half of Mike Wright’s #4 but he gathered up what appeared to be a devastating accident in the making.  The #16 of Klamath Falls’ Rich Cobb paced the field until the first caution for a spinning Stan Gunderson.   Action resumed with Young and Borden both working the SRP outside groove to make their respective passes.  At the half-way mark, second year chauffeur Cobb, having the race of his life was leading Borden, Young, Devin LaHorgue, and Roger Lorenzini Jr.  Lap 16 saw Borden charge to the outside entering turn three and set up Cobb.  Side-by-side the two ran for another lap before the 39x forged to the point.   On lap 18 Young duplicated Borden’s efforts displacing Cobb to third.    The SRP crowd anticipated an end of the race duel between the four-time track champion and the 2008 Rookie of the year however the last few laps saw Borden increase his modest lead over the beautiful, blue #7.   At the stripe it was Borden with the victory over Young, a career best finish of third for Cobb, followed by LaHorgue, Lorenzini, improving Michael Helwig, Wright, Gunderson, Vanderpool, and Oller.

After going winless in 2009, Borden has now won two of the last three Taylor Motors Modifieds events and has opened up a sizeable 26 point lead over Young.

The next Taylor Motors Modified Event will be fair night June 19.  For times and ticket information please go to the SRP website at www.shastaracewaypark.net

Rookie Lorenzini Jr. Cops Third Annual Craig Brown Memorial at SRP

by Rick Faeth
A brilliant Saturday Evening and a full grandstand despite the Redding Rodeo saw a stellar 50-Lap Craig Brown Memorial Race featuring the rapid Taylor Motors Modifieds. Taking the checkered flag was SRP rookie driver Roger Lorenzini Jr. from Montague driving his own black #01 LaHorgue Chassis. During the last dozen laps the second generation racer fended off numerous attacks by both defending track champion Guy Young and perennial front-runner Randy Houston. Lorenzini managed to hold off both in a surprise win. This was only Roger’s fourth time on the fast 3/8th’s mile oval. Rounding out the top five were steady Devin LaHorgue and Mike Wright. Heat race action saw Young and Cody Braund cop wins. Randy Houston was the fast qualifier and Young took the four lap trophy dash.

The door slamming Les Schwab Bombers saw a competitive main event with Redding’s Dave Lewallen performing a clean sweep, taking top qualifying honors as well as winning the dash, his heat race, and the 30-lap main event. The #48 was followed to the line by defending Bomber Champion Brian King making his first 2010 Bomber appearance. Third was Duane Hoffman, fourth was Brian Smith subbing for injured Josh Dorman, and fifth was Whitmore’s Chris Michael.

Mirroring the efforts of Lewallen was Redding’s veteran Joe Bratolli performing a similar clean sweep of the Mini Napa Mini-Stocks division. The always fast #55 was followed to the checkers by Scott Murphy, Dale Stelt, Pete Smith III, and Keith LaHue.

The great night of action was christened with the first ever High School Challenge Series Event for the 14-20 year olds competing in Hornet Legal race cars. West Valley’s Luke Wright driving the zippy #22 of Ed Pulfer held off the challenges of Matt Chain, Levi Crile, Noah Smith, and Josh Ide in the inaugural 12-Lap feature.

The regular I-5 Tire Factory Hornets blasted around the 3/8th mile oval with Cottonwood’s Ed Pulfer winning followed by Thomas Graham, and rookie Josh Ide.

The coup de grace for this great night of motorsports bore witness to SRP’s first boat race of the 2010 season with regulars Brian King and Russ Taylor being out-applauded by Anderson’s own Randy Riggins. A special guest appearance was made by Klamath Falls Late Model Driver Bobby Hirschbock driving the S.S. Jolly Rogers Pirate Bus.

Action at SRP returns May 29 &30 for the 3rd Annual California Vintage Nationals Featuring Sprint Cars, Midgets, & Hardtops from the 1930’s to the early 1970’s. Saturday and Sunday will feature both Mini Cups and Baby Grands with the Taylor Motors Modifieds also starring on Saturday Night. Reduced ticket prices for both days and free hot dogs will be provided for ticket purchasers.

A gorgeous Saturday Evening and a good crowd saw a rare six class program at Shasta Raceway Park on Saturday Night May 1st. The City of Anderson Night presented by Bartel’s Burger’s welcomed back the Sonic Late Models, Taylor Motors Modifieds, BPT Carburetor Pro-4 Modifieds, Napa Mini Stocks, Les Schwab Bombers, and the fan favorite I-5 Tire Factory Hornet Division.

he Hornet division action started off with a very exciting win in the trophy dash by 15-year old rookie Levi Crile in car #95. Heats were captured by John Johnson Jr. and Thomas Graham. The main event unfortunately saw the earlier success of young Crile tarnished as he turned over on the back straight away necessitating a red flag. The 15-lap main event was captured for the second time of the year by Cottonwood’s Ed Pulfer, followed by Johnson Jr., and JJ Crile who vaulted into the points lead.

The BPT Carburetor Pro-4 Modifieds were up next. Previous SRP winner Kyle Tellstrom wrecked his mount on the front straightaway in heat race action but his apt crew repaired the stellar #5k to come back and earn a yeoman’s runner up finish behind Greg Van Cleave in the 30-lap feature. Van Cleave out-paced the field in qualifying, while Kevin Barba took trophy dash and heat race one honors. Jake Tillman triumphed in the second heat. Barba was third in the finale with Tillman fourth.

The Napa Mini-Stocks signed in with 9 cars. Al Stelt marked his return with an updated and beautifully painted #5 VW Karman Ghia by garnering the trophy dash. Defending champion and Brother Dale was victorious in the second heat. The rest of the evening was all Scotty Murphy. The Silver #77 streaked to fast time, a heat race win, and the 20-lap feature. The likeable Anderson native is a scant 9 points behind rookie point leader Pete Smith III.

The full moon took no prisoners during the Les Schwab Bombers event. Calamitous main event action saw sparks and cement chips fly as the #48 Dave Lewallen picked his way through the carnage for his second main event win of the 2010 season. Injured Josh Dorman turned the driving reigns of the #29 over to capable veteran Brian Smith who showed his mettle early in the trophy dash. Lewallen was the quickest qualifier and he and Smith captured the two preliminary heats. Main event action saw Duane Hoffman in car #5 pace the field through the first 15-laps. After the customary turnaround is when Lewallen started to apply the pressure and forge into the lead. That’s where he stayed, being chased to the line by Hoffman, Smith, and newcomer Brian Stankey in the sharp #57 Brad Woods Trans-Am.

The Taylor Motors Modifieds battled as they usually do in close quarters. Stan Gunderson bolted to the early lead while Kyle Borden and Guy Young side-stepped through the field. Young and Gunderson were involved in a tussle entering turn one which caused a yellow and the field scattered behind them. Cottonwood’s Kyle Borden captured the swift 30-lapper over fast-improving Devin LaHorgue, and steady Cody Braund. Borden was fast qualifier and captured the first heat, Jon Vanderpool won the second heat and Young netted the dash.

The finale for the SRP crowd on this jam-packed racing night was the Sonic Late Models 40-lap feature. The ‘Medford Missile’ Randy Houston in car #9 after blazing to fast time and trophy dash honors stretched out a large lead in the feature only to see the lead evaporate with two laps to go. This brought the #2 of Eric Gannon onto the back bumper of Houston. All bets were off when the green was displayed as Houston dropped the hammer to his first Late Model win of the year. Gannon held off long-time Oregon veteran David Miller in his own well prepared #22 mount, followed by point leader Mike Doss, Forest Kuecker, David Dillinger Jr., and Dallas Shane.

Action at SRP returns May 15 for John Lambirth Trucking Night. On tap will be 3rd Annual Craig Brown Memorial 50-lap Modified Race, along with the Sonic Late Models, Mini Stocks, Bomber, Hornets, and the first High School Challenge Series Event of the year. The evening will be capped with the first boat race of the year as well. For times and ticket information please go to the SRP website at www.shastaracewaypark.net

USAC Sprint Cars Invade Shasta Raceway Park for Hot-O-Rama Weekend

By Rick Faeth
For the first time in five years the roar of 410 cubic inch V-8 sprint car motors thundered around the 3/8-mile oval in Anderson last Saturday Night in front of a packed grandstand.

The Amsoil sponsored United States Auto Club Western States Sprint car Series featured a 40-lap main event with Jo Jo Helberg capturing the checkered flag over Shawna Hogg, Tony Hunt, and Tanner Swanson. Fast time and a new track record early in the night raised the hopes of veteran Audra Sasselli…those hopes were dashed however as she rode out a hard impact into the turn one crash wall abruptly ending her night. Hogg roared to the heat race win and Helberg steered his Hornet-chassis Sprint Car to the trophy dash crown.

The Taylor Motors Modifieds ran a blazing, non-stop 30 lap main event with young title contender Jon Vanderpool holding off returning veteran Randy Houston to capture his first feature of the year. Main event action saw splendid side-by-side action by Cody Braund who finished fourth and fast qualifier Kyle Borden who ran the outside groove to third. Defending track champion Guy Young hit the wall in practice causing him to miss qualifying. Young and crew scrambled to repair the car for the feature and were rewarded by a fifth place finish.

The Napa Mini Stock’s on Napa Night ended up with a tight finish between wily veteran VW pilot Dale Stelt over rookie of the year contender Pete Smith III in his newly acquired Toyota. Keith Lahue, Gary Mangels, and Doug Winegarden rounded out the top-five.

Micah Parmer the two-time defending champion of the SRP Legends Series rolled to another victory over up and coming Buddy Cox. Cox won the Master’s portion of the main event over teammate Howard Hammers, Terry Madjeski, and ‘Bullet” Bob Kuebler.

Ironically on Napa Auto Parts Night at SRP it was Cottonwood driver and Franklin Auto Parts employee
JJ Crile who toughed out a hard fought affair over young rival John Johnson Jr. Pete Smith, daughter Barb Bruner, and early point leader Ed Pulfer rounded out the top five.

The next event at SRP will be Saturday Night, May 1, City of Anderson Night presented by Bartel’s Burger’s. The anticipated return of the Sonic Late Models to the 3/8-mile oval will also feature the Taylor Motors Modifieds, BPT Carburetor Pro-4 Modifieds, Napa Mini Stocks, Les Schwab Bombers, and the I-5 Tire Factory Hornets.

Oct. 5th, 2009 -
"Epic": That's what Randy Houston called lengthy battle that he and Steven Gannon waged during the I-5 Tire Factory and Auto City SRP Fall Open 125 Super Late Model Feature Event.  In last year's SRP Open Show Houston battled from the back of the pack only to finish in the runner-up spot to Gannon.  Houston was determined to not allow a repeat and not only passed Gannon but held off Noel McCormack who, in the last 10 or so laps of the race, appeared seemingly out of nowhere in Houston's mirror and challenged for the lead.   Houston had earlier picked up the win in the Trophy Dash.  McCormack finished second just ahead of Gannon and Darrell Midgley who had made the long tow, as he has for many years, from British Columbia Canada.  "Prodigal Son", Kyle Cattanach, tucked in to take the 4th place finish.  Cattanach, who currently lives and works in North Carolina for Spraker Racing, returned to his home track where he holds track championship titles.  A mid-race spin had put him all the way to the back so his climb to the 4th spot was particularly impressive.

Epic well describes the entire weekend of racing.  What a refreshing and encouraging sight it was to see so many great drivers gather for the traditional fall open show at the historic Anderson facility. Over eighty cars showed up to compete in 2 days of fantastic racing.  The event was made possible by a handful of sponsors. I-5 Tire Factory (visit their website here )in Red Bluff shined as the spotlight sponsor for the Super Late Models and Hornets as Auto City (visit their website here)sponsored the Modified Division.  Both of these companies have truly helped keep auto racing alive in the north state.  Five divisions of cars filled the days with hours of practice testing and tuning their cars for the feature events on Sunday.  Super Late Models, Modifieds, Bombers, Mini Stocks and Hornets were all on the menu for the Sunday show.

The entire event got great support from some very important people in the sport.  Promoters and race directors from all over California came to lend support and help out with the event.  Bob and Nadine Strauss, David Furia, Dan & Wendy McIntire, Jennifer Aiken, Bob and Pat Carrel, Lloyd and Mary Burton, and the list goes on and on.  "It was great to have these guys all come out to support the event and the sport." Said SRP Promoter Rick Faeth.  "There needs to be communication, support and commeraderie between tracks so that the sport can thrive like it has in the past."

And the racing continued - Another 'prodigal son' took home a double-header win: Scott Winters won top honors in both the Feature Event and the Trophy Dash in the Auto City Modifieds Race. Winters, who grew up racing at SRP, also had an epic battle on his hands. His feature event win included a long, hard race against 2009 SRP track champion and open show winner Guy Young who took home a second place finish. Wes Miller in the 'Poor boy's Eninges & Machines' #7 Mod took third ahead of Rich Lindgren and Jerrad Beddow.

Sarale Claims Inaugural Western Combo Car Midget Nationals
By Robert Haugh

After wrestling his way to the lead aboard the Glen Siedelman #4 Hawk/Gaerte on Lap 7, two-time BCRA Midget champion John Sarale of Stockton roared to victory in the inaugural Western Combo Car Midget Nationals at the gorgeous 3/8-mile Shasta Raceway Park in Anderson, CA on Saturday, October 17.

Chasing Sarale to the checkers in the 30-lap green-to-checkers race were five-time SRP track champion Guy Young of Redding in the Dave Thurston #17 TCR/Gaerte, Danny Parker aboard Bob Roza’s TEAM F.A.S.T. (Fighting Against Steroids Together) #20 Beast/Esslinger, Cheyenne, Wyoming’s Cory Mallo in the #9m Rory Mallo Stealth/RRE Chevy EcoTec and Lonnie Alton in his #5a Stealth/SuperFocus rounding out the top five.

Dillon Silverman jumped to the early lead aboard Rick Young’s #98 Stealth/RRE Chevy EcoTec from his third starting spot, leading the first two rounds before SRP promoter Faeth charged from sixth, overtaking Silverman for the lead on Lap 3.  Faeth led through Lap 6 until ninth-starting Sarale and tenth-starting Siedelman sliced through the pack, with Sarale inheriting the lead on Lap seven when he snuck beneath Faeth exiting Turn 2, with Siedelman making the move under Faeth for second. Guy Young displaced Faeth to move into third on Lap 8. Rick Young dropped out on lap 6 with an ill-handling car.

Seidelman began chasing down teammate Sarale, steadily gaining on the two-time BCRA champ Sarale for several laps.  Unfortunately, for Siedelman, mechanical gremlins caused him to exit on Lap 14.

Faeth and Parker were drag racing for several laps mid-pack, with Faeth fighting a tight condition and Parker a loose condition.  Parker overtook Faeth for the fourth spot on Lap 18.

Mallo and Alton were battling fiercely for the fifth and six spots when Faeth lost his brakes, making heavy contact with Alton, launching Faeth’s #3 Stealth/Chevy V4 high into the air in turn 4 --- luckily Faeth was able to resume under his own power, avoiding a caution period and exiting the track safely.

After 30 intense, caution-free laps, Sarale claimed the victory by 1.6 seconds over Guy Young, Parker, Mallo and Alton.

Sarale claimed Heat 2 over Young, Parker and fast-qualifier Tony Siedelman in his #24 Hawk/Autocraft VW.  Cameron Park’s Alton claimed Heat 1 over Vacaville’s Rick Holbrook in his #6 ART/Kawasaki Midget Lite, Shingle Springs’ Rick Young in his #99 Stealth/RRE Chevy EcoTec and Silverman.  Holbrook claimed the B-Dash over Chico’s Dillon Silverman in Rick Young’s #98 Stealth/RRE Chevy EcoTec, Mallo and Alton.  Sarale claimed the A-Dash over Guy Young and Siedelman.  Both Dashes awarded cash payouts of $100 to the winner, $50 for 2nd, $30 for 3rd and $20 for 4th place.  Siedelman set fast-time with a 15.606 lap.

For the first time ever on the west coast, Midget Lites were competing on pavement, alongside combo car Midgets with Super Focus, RRE Chevy EcoTec and National Midget engines. The feature race was fully inverted with the fast qualifiers having started in the rear.

Unfortunately, Stu Donaldson’s was lacking luck this weekend, with Mike Donaldson scratching Stu Donaldson’s #8 Stealth/Gaerte after a Heat 1 incident with unrepairable damage, while former BCRA car owner champion Bill Lindsey was forced to scratch in Stu Donaldson’s #8x Stealth/Pontiac after breaking a front axle in Heat 1.

Oakdale’s Dakota Albright made a good impression in his first-ever pavement venture aboard his #35jr ART/Kawasaki Midget Lite, however, was battling oil leak problems all weekend.

“For all that were present it was clear that this formula was a success as there was spirited racing through the pack with all types of engine and chassis formulas.  Shasta Raceway Park is committed to making this an annual year-end event and hopes that it will give legitimacy to the Midget combo-car formula,” says SRP promoter Faeth.

Summary:
Qualifications: 1. Tony Seidelman, Tacoma, WA, Glen Seidelman #24 Hawk/Autocraft-VW, 15.602; 2. John Sarale, Stockton, CA, Tony Siedelman #4 Hawk/Gaerte, 15.637; 3. The Weather was Hot - but the Racing was Hotter Still

Despite some of the hottest temperatures so far this summer, lots of cars and fans turned out to see some great racing as the Taylor Motors' Modified Division, the NAPA Auto Parts Mini Stocks and the Les Schwab Bombers continued their season points battles. The four regular classes were joined by two traveling series - the BPT Carburetor Pro 4 Modifieds and the Thunder Roadsters.

Making their fifth appearance this year were the Pro 4 Modifieds. These open wheel powerhouses are miniature versions of the standard Modifieds and provide as much, if not more side-by-side racing action. Making their first appearance of the season were the fast and beautiful Thunder Roadsters. Like the Pro 4 Modifieds these are scaled-down versions of other famed race cars. Some have body types like a traditional roadster and others sport a newly adapted Indy-Style design. These fearless drivers worked the track like a swarm of angry wasps - side-by-side racing throughout the pack, lots of exciting passing and lead swapping leads to some of the best racing the track has seen all year.

In the Modified Division current Points Leader Guy Young won the Feature Event just ahead of Kyle Borden. Borden had to make his way up to the front through a pack of competitors to challenge the veteran Young for the top spot. Steven Gannon, many timed Late Model, Super Late Model and Mini Stock champion, was piloting the #18 Modified for the evening and won the Trophy Dash over Guy Young. In the winner's circle Steven touted the challenge of driving the open-wheeled, big-engined Modifieds by comparing them to in difficulty to driving the legendary 410 Winged Sprint cars. Steven, no stranger to open-wheel racing has raced Outlaw Sprint Karts since he was just a kid. Speaking of young, seventeen year old Jon Vanderpool set the fast time qualifying lap early in the evening.

The Mini Stock Division has enjoyed a resurgence this year with a steady showing of cars and some truly talented racing. Scotty Murphy, current points leader for the division, took the win for the Feature Event. Murphy led most of the race but was tailed closely by veteran Dale Stelt who tried everything possible to make the pass for the lead and the whole thing came down to a spectacular homestretch drag race to the line with the cars only separated by a few inches. Dale's brother Al Stelt won the Trophy Dash for the class over Murphy.

As always the Bombers rocked the house. After a crash-fest first lap in the Feature Event the pack restarted and continued the good-old fashion no-holds-barred battles. Dave Lewallen was the class of the field in the Feature Event as he fought his way through some hair-raising situations to get to the front of the pack. After 15 laps of normal direction racing, the cars were stopped, turned around and raced clockwise for the remaining 15 laps. This not only challenges the cars and the drivers, but makes it really exciting for the fans to watch. Lewallen continued his push to the lead as he had to pass strong running Brian King and Brian Smith to cross the checkered line first. David Dillinger took home the hardware in the Trophy Dash earlier in the night.

The Pro 4 Mods never fail to put on a great show, and this week was no exception. Sponsored by BPT Carburetors here at Shasta Raceway Park, they race as a group at a number of western state tracks. This week the #13 of Greg Vancleave, after setting second fast time in qualifying, won the Trophy Dash. A Trophy Dash is a four lap race of just four cars run in typical shootout style. The Feature Event saw eight cars hit the track. Vancleave, while heading up the pack, suffered mechanical problems and was forced to take his car into the pits. The #14 of John Barker was able to take the lead and go on to win his second Feature Event at Shasta. In victory circle the humble Barker praised the track and facilities and thanked his fellow racers.

Making a rare, but much anticipated, return to the historic track at Shasta Raceway Park were the Thunder Roadsters. Super cool looking, super fast, these scaled-down cars were every bit as exciting as any other division that races. The class requires a "Crate" motor, which is a sealed, standardized engine which levels the playing field and allows everyone in the class to be contender. Even on the heat slick track the lap times were in the 17 second range - very impressive considering full-sized Modifieds run only about 1/2 second faster, and the Bombers about 2 seconds slower. Dave Henderson in his beautiful #2 Roadster set the second fastest lap in qualifying and went on to win the Trophy Dash over Brandon Barnwell. Barnwell in the #9 car won the hot Feature Event. He, Henderson, Paul Peeples and several others formed a dense pack of cars that pitched hard-charging battles throughout the race.

The next race for the venue will be on August 1st when the Sonic Late Models, Modifieds, Bombers and Hornets will take to the track to continue their points races but will be followed up by the most popular event ever - a Boat Race ! - Don't miss this crowd-pleasing derby of a utter destruction - as a flotilla of un-seaworthy boats meet their doom under the crunching metal of dozens of cars and other boats.

Despite a torrential thunderstorm shortly before the racing action was to begin the track crew mustered their personal vehicles and drove laps on the wet track until it had dried enough to begin a great night of racing. As fan-goers began to return to the soggy stands it immediately became evident that they were in for a ton of racing action.

Pro 4 Mods

The scheduled "Meet and Greet" had to be postponed due to time constraints, so the night began with the traditional Trophy Dashes. These are four lap, four car shootouts where the winner takes home a great trophy as well as gallant introduction to the crowd on the frontstretch. The track's usual program is to then run Heat Races which will determine the starting lineups for the Feature Events of the night. Again, time constraints led the Trophy Dashes directly into the Feature Mains. Up first were the BPT Carburetor's Pro 4 Modifieds. These cool little open-wheel cars are 4 stroke miniatures of the regular

Legend Race

Modifieds that run at Shasta. The semi-traveling series always puts on a great show with lots of tight, side-by-side racing. Tonight was no exception, save for a gut-crunching pile-up crash on the first lap, the race ran smooth and fast.

The Legend Division saw seven cars competing. It was Buddy Cox who dominated the night with a double-header win - taking home the hardware in both the Trophy Dash and the Main Event.

Ten Mini Stocks put on an excellent exhibition of just what these little powerhouses can do. Nancy Wright - The RACE QUEEN - won the Trophy Dash and long-time Shasta racer and track champion Dale Stelt held off his brother, Al, to win in the Feature Event.

The Taylor Motor's Modifieds continued the run of nearly caution-free racing as Eric Gannon, sitting in as substitute driver in the #18 Modified won over Mike Wright. And in the Feature Event it was Stan Gunderson in his #64 Modified who took the lead early and stayed clear of the hard-charging Guy Young to take the checkered flag first. And everybody's favorite, the Sonic Drive-In Late Models had a strong field of 10 cars including brothers Eric and Steven Gannon,

Eric Gannon Late
Model Winner

and brothers Bobby and RandyHirschbock who tow in from Klamath Falls each week to race with us at Shasta.

The Gannon Brothers were the class of the field. Sons of the legendary Roger Gannon - multi-time track champion at the historic speedway, they have continued the tradition of great competitors and champions. Steven Gannon took home the Trophy Dash win while brother Eric had to battle through some hell-bent drivers to take the lead and win the race.

Nineteen beautiful Late Models took the green flag in the Airport Auto Brokers Late Model Main Event this past Saturday night.  There was some incredible racing as the touring series continued their season. Sitting 7th in points going into this race, Eric Graham nabbed his second in a row wire-to-wire victory on the oval in Anderson.   Local racers Steven Gannon and Randy Houston were included in the line-up. Houston won the Trophy Dash and Gannon came in second place in the Feature Event. Series promoter Mike Doss set fast time for the class came in third for the feature followed by Allen Gibney and Jeremy Hopkins.

The Taylor Motors' Modifieds continued their points races with Kelly Peacock winning the main event over Cody Braund. Braund has assumed the helm of the Epperson #18 Modified from his brother Keith Bloom Jr. who has headed back east to compete in 410 Sprints. Mike Wright took home the hardware in the Trophy Dash and Kyle Borden set the quickest time during qualifying.

The NAPA Auto Parts' Mini Stocks also ran their points races with Dale Stelt winning a tough battle with Ken Krause in the main event. Brother Al Stelt won the Trophy Dash over Scotty Murphy who had set fast time earlier in the evening.

I-5 Tire Factory in Red Bluff's Hornets were out in a full-force swarm. Pete Smith III held sway over Bill Swaney and Pete Smith for the main event. Al Koop won the Trophy Dash while Nathan Bruner and again, Pete Smith, took home heat race wins.

May 16, 2009 Update !
Congratulations to Guy Young the winner of the 2009 Craig Brown Memorial Modifieds Race.

The race was a fantastic display of top-notch Modified racing.  Randy Houston in the #9 led the majority of 50 laps the race ran but was foiled by a slipped gear as the race was coming down to the final lap.  Guy took advantage of the bobble and powered his way around Houston to take the win.  It was Devin LaHorgue who took home the hardware in the Trophy Dash for the division.

Congratulations to Eric Gannon winner of the Sonic Late Model Feature Event and Paul Baker who nabbed his first Late Model Trophy Dash win.  In the Mini Stock division Ken Krause won the Trophy Dash.  Fast time setter, Dale Stelt, won the Feature Event ahead of hard-charging Shane Spinner.  Micah Parmer set fast time in the Legends division and won the heated Feature Event.  Buddy Cox in the cool green #3 Legend took the trophy home in the dash.

Craig 'Coo Coo' Warren in Bill Swaney's #Z3 Hornet, winner of the first ever SRP Officials Race on May 9.

Les Schwab Bomber Division:
Regarding the May 9th event, pre-race tech inspection yielded three cars not conforming to the 175 pounds engine compression rule.  Car #8 and Car #97 both are penalized 5 points and fined $20.  Car #13 did not conform but since it did not compete there is no penalty.  All three cars must submit to new compression tests before the May 30 event.

Taylor Motors Modified Division:
After the April 25th Modified race post-race tech inspection of car #9 yielded non-conforming front spindles.  These spindles were purchased directly from the chassis manufacturer of the #9 modified and marketed as stock replacement spindles.   However, close scrutiny of the spindles indicated that they are not stock but have fabricated steering arm mounts and thus do not meet the SRP rule which is stock OEM or IMCA.  This incident is an unfortunate result of what occurs when manufacturers take it upon themselves to liberarly interpret what is stock and then create parts without sanctioning body input.  Modified #9 will be be paid last place main event points and money.

Although this was only the 2nd points race for the track divisions it is clear that this season is gonna be incredible. The Sonic Late Models saw nine cars sign-in to compete. As the season progresses the class will no doubt continue to grow as builders and drivers get their rides ready to roll and as news gets out that the racing is more exciting than ever.  Thirteen roaring Bombers took the flag in the Feature Event of the night. Nine NAPA Auto Parts Mini Stocks qualified and for their first event of the season at SRP the BPT Carburetor sponsored Pro-4 Modifieds saw 7 cars come out to take a turn on our oval.   And no one will be forgetting the awesome Boat Race at the end of the night! In addition to Bombers, Hornets, and assorted trucks, several full-on Demolition Derby cars took to the track to rip up a whole bunch of boats !

The evening started with the traditional Trophy Dashes.  Steven Gannon sitting in for Gary Pyszora in the #14 won the trophy in the Late Model division just ahead of David Braund.  Both heat races were championed by a Hirschbock Brother - Randy taking the win in Heat One and Bobby in Heat Two.  The Feature Event saw some of the tightest action possible.  B Hirschbock, Alan Pyszora and Steven Gannon held the top spots for a long run as Alan worked the back of Gannon's car.  A slide up the track for Gannon opened the door for Pyszora who made the pass and he set sail for the checkered flag.   Eric Gannon,  B Hirschbock, Braund and S Gannon finished out the top 5.

The Bombers put on one of the best races in recent memory.  Up front for the reverse-start Feature Event Brian King and David Dillenger took spot-swappin' to a whole new level as they traded leads over and over running side-by-side for nearly the entire 15 lap retro-run.  Half-way thru the cars were stopped, turned around to run the right way and if anything the action got even hotter between King and Dillenger. It was truly thrilling.  But in the end Dillenger's car became to fade and King came across the checkered in first place.  The third, fourth and fifth spots went to Chester Brown, Duane Hoffman and Josh Dorman.  Dillenger taken home the hardware in the Trophy Dash win and Brian Smith and Chester Brown won their heat races.

Now, the Mini Stocks were literally "On Fire" ... at least Al Stelt.  In the Feature Event Al was dogging brother Dale for the lead and with only a couple of laps to go his engine let loose and burst into flames.  Off the track, down the ramps he flew to the nearest fire truck.  The fire was extinguished as brother Dale was left to spin the oil laid down by the Karman Ghia.  The race was called a lap short because of the extended clean-up time and Dale Stelt was crowned the winner.   "Race Queen" Nancy Wright won the earlier Trophy Dash which celebrated in brazen style ! - Thanks for the show Nancy !! - She went on to win her heat as "Fireball" Al Stelt won his.

Pro-4 Modifieds - if you have never seen this division race you owe it to yourself to come out and watch their next appearance on May 1st.  These miniature modifieds put on a great show. Lots of tight racing and super clean competition. This appearance saw Codi Barba take the win in the Trophy Dash and his heat race. Heat Two was won by Kurt Lewis and the Feature Event was won by top qualifier Greg VanCleve in the beautiful red #13.  We all look forward to seeing this division continue to do battle on the SRP oval.

And the Boat Race ! Wow.  A bunch of high-powered cars, driven by certified lunatics and maniacs, towing a bunch of derelict boats are proven to make huge mess and thrill a packed grandstand.  Right off the bat the excitement started as boats and cars criss-crossed and chased each other around the super-slick watered track.   Shasta's own Robert Pacey and Brian King did their fair share of demolition, but it was the thunderous Derby Cars that stole the show as they mashed and trashed boat after boat.

Thanks to everyone who turned out for a great night of racing !!

SRP Track Surface Repair:
Shasta Raceway Park is proud to announce that starting the week of March 2nd we will be embarking upon major repairs to the track surface.   Large expansion cracks that have developed in the older track surface allow water to seep in and erode away the base material.  This allows for further weakening of additonal areas and more surface cracks to develop, and the cycle repeats.  Time and weather also affect the asphalt surface adversely.  Therefore, Faeth Motorsports, Inc. in conjunction with the Shasta District Fair, and California Hot Seal of Lakehead, CA are combining efforts to route and permanently repair 4200 linear feet of the largest most troublesome areas in the turn 1 & 2 areas.  It is hoped that we'll get a break in the weather for a week to ten days so that the process can be completed before the first practice.  This project will cost in excess of $17,000 with all parties contributing.  This has been a winter-long effort to get approved and funded, and I am pleased with the support that the Shasta District Fair staff and the 27th District Agricultural Association Fair Board have given this project.  It is hoped that we will garner an additonal 5 years of racing from this process and if it is succesful we will look to do the front and back straightaways in subsequent years.

SRP Winter Track Work:
This week the entire SRP pit area was restriped all lines arrows and pit stalls.   The track was also re-striped.  A 100' underground drain was installed starting on the turn four apron and extending into the infield.  This will help combat water from collecting in the lowest area of the track.
