| NEWS JUNE 28, 2008 - Smoky and Smokin - A Night at the Races in Shasta
Despite thick smoke from
the hundreds of fires burning in the area, intrepid fans braved the heat and the smoke to
be witness to some of the best racing of the seasons. There was an EPIC battle
between Bill Lancaster and Gary Pyzsora during the Late Model main event. Gary,
whose car was running in top condition, was dogged for a dozen plus laps as "Wild
Bill Lancaster" worked every angle possible to unseat the veteran driver in the Auto
City late model for second place at the checkered flag. Point leader Alan Pyzsora
ended the evening culminating in his third main event triumph of 2008 on a very special
night that saw his teenage daughter Taylor serve as the SRP trophy presenter.
Congrats to Jon Vanderpool who dominated and won
the Modified Feature Event. This was the young Vanderpool's first feature win of
2008 and second career victory. On the start he moved quickly to the front and
started to walk away from the pack. As the rest of the field sliced and diced and
occaisionally utilized the potential of the Shasta two groove option to make some strong
passes - mostly down in turns 3 and 4. This season has seen the Modifieds display
unparrelled competion, outstanding sportsmanship and respect both on and off the
field. This combines to make them a premier division at Shasta. Kudos to the
entire Vanderpool/Moreira modified team!
The Legends Division saw some new comers racing
including Trophy Dash winner Johnny Morrissey and his brother Phillip. Ken Crome,
Mark Tabor and Hunter Colodney added to the pack which includes point leaders, Micah
Parmer and Chad Foster. Going into this race they were separated by only a single
point. Some great racing between them had the crowd on their feet, but it was Parmer who
took the checkered first in the feature event.
Mini
Stocks continue to be one of the best racing classes this season. Matt Beardsley set
the fast time as well taking the win for the Feature Event just over Nancy Wright.
Ken Krause, who took third in the Main was the winner of the trophy dash.
Bomber action saw Robert Pacey set the fast lap at 19.854 seconds
but had to settle for second place in the trophy dash to winner David Dillenger.
Dillenger's night was a big success - he won his heat race, the trophy dash AND the Main event. Congrats David on a great night.
Another Great Night of Racing ! - with the Craig Brown Memorial 50 Lap
Modified Race and the Boat Races being the spotlight events.

Eleven
of the top Modifieds on the west cost lined up to do battle in tribute to Craig Brown - a
longtime fixture at Shasta Raceway. Randy Houston returned to the track and all around
racer Steven Gannon made his modified debut in the #18 of Jack Epperson. And, won
the Trophy Dash. Steven holds championships in Outlaw Karts, Mini Stocks, Pro Stocks, Late
Models, Super Late Models and now proved his skills in a modified. The big money
purse also brought back to the track Randy Houston to pit against the regular modified
drivers.
It was a 50 lap battle royal in which the
leaders swapped spots repeatedly. As the laps started ticking by, the front of the
pack settled in as Kevin Brink, Guy Young and Charlie Kramm ran a race so tight you could
throw a blanket over them most of the time. Kramm running third made dozens of bold moves
on his longtime racing buddy Guy Young, but just couldn't seem to get around to the second
spot. Meanwhile Guy was upping the ante with
every lap - pushing harder and harder on the #23 of Brink. Looking high, then low, Young,
in keeping with the whole tone of the night, kept it clean as a whistle even in the last
desperate laps.
The race wrapped up with Brink taking the checkered first, with Young, Kramm and Kyle
Borden skidding in just behind. It was a great last lap with a legendary drag race
between the 2,3,4 spots. Congratulations to Kevin Brink !
In the hard-racing Mini Stock Division, Dale Stelt had a great start to the night
setting fast time at 18.500 seconds which he followed up with win for the Trophy Dash.
Christopher Kuska,
making only his second run in a mini stock, won his hard-battled heat race and crowd
favorite Nanci Wright winged in a first place in her heat race just out of reach of Dale
Stelt. Main Event time saw 8 cars start the race and scramble hard for the front
positions. Dale Stelt made the best of that run and took an early and commanding
lead while Wright, Shane Spinner and Ken Krause race behind. For Dale a late race
spin in turns 3-4 brought out a yellow flag and forced the veteran to start from the back
of the pack. With only a few laps remaining he charged thru traffic but it wasn't
enough as Nancy Wright, who had pulled out to a decent lead herself, flew across the
finish line winning her first Main Even of the year !
11 of the best Legend Drivers on the West Coast came out to race under the nearly full
moon. Derek Copeland - Legends Champion - returned to the track in a very nice
rented legend and set fast time just over Chad Foster. Current points leader,
Micah Parmer had mechanical troubles and didn't set a usable qualifying time. Trophy
Dash saw Derek Copeland take the #33 car to the winner's circle followed by Buddy
Cox. A hard run heat race saw Parmer win just over Copeland. The Main Event
had one of the worst Legend's wrecks in recent memory as race leader Jojo Owens was coming
into turn one he got caught up and impacted slower traffic causing the car to nose dive
into the pavement shearing off wheels at the bolts, then spin violently into the wall
where the damage to the beautiful 31 car continued for several more yards. Jojo,
visibly frustrated by ending his winning run in such a devastating hit crawled safely from
his car to the cheers of the fans.
Hornets ! - The Hornets put on another great show !! Complete results and photos coming
soon.
Boat Races !! - the event
everyone was waiting for - despite the record hot temperatures a big crowd of staunch race
fans and lovers of destruction came to see the carnage that is ..... Boat Races !
Marking the first of the Boat Races for the season, a big group of cars, trucks and boats
took to the wetted track and instantly began a beating a course of destruction for the
doomed boats. Crashes, explosions and even a stubborn car fire ensued as the mayhem
continued. One car and boat was stuffed with hay - and made for a smoky spectacular
spectacle as it lit the night sky. In the end - after four grueling rounds of boat
bashing - a winner was chosen by audience participation. - The winner will be announced
soon - so check back !!! - Also coming - Photos, Videos and more !!! - Check back often
!!!!

Last week 5/03/08, Dale Stelt (#6 Mini) should have received last
place main event points for breaking during qualifying. An additional 32 points has
been added to his total. Apologies for the oversight Dale.

Another great night of racing as Shasta ran its seventh points race of the year.
Last night saw the first of two races scheduled for the Pro 4 Modifieds - and what a show
they put on! Eleven of these sleek open wheel cars competed on the big asphalt oval last
night. And these cars are FAST - with lap times nearing that of their larger
counterpoints, the Modifieds, but with more agility to make quick side-by-side passes -
they make for some edge-of-the-seat racing. Kevin Dutcher who is usually on the
other side of the wall being crew for Bill Binns made his racing debut last night and took
home the hardware for the Trophy Dash. Ken Gifford had a double crown night by
making the fastest lap of the pack, and winning a very racy main event. The Pro 4
Mods are slated to return to Shasta on July 26 - Honestly - Don't miss this race !
Late Model action just keeps getting better! Last night 9 roaring Late Models
took to the track including Derek Copeland making only his second Late Model appearance
ever, driving the #77 Hen House car sponsored by Lyle Lindsey. Last week the
youngster turned some heads as he took his skills as a Champion Legends Driver and
Champion Outlaw Kart Driver and put them to use in the big late model as he took the
honors of winning the Trophy Dash. This week the 17 year old held off all the
veterans who were looking for anyway around his car. Power, strong driving and
knowing just where to put that car in each turn let Copeland hold off all advances.
Congratulations to Derek on his first, of which we are sure will be many Late
Model race. Meanwhile behind him the pack was racing hard and the action got dicey.
There were several spins and cautions as the competition heated up. Gary
Pyszora won the earlier Trophy Dash competing against his son Alan.
The Bomber Division saw 9 drivers hit the pavement and each other in another great
round of Bomber racing. Bobby "Corndog" Crowell came out on top in the
Feature Event which saw a lot of bumpin' and bangin' as the drivers hurled their behemoths
around the tight turns. Duane Hoffman had a great run and took the honors of winning
the Trophy Dash.
Dale Stelt returned to race the Mini Stocks and quickly set fast time in qualifying and
won the Main Event just over Nancy Wright - Who, by the way won her first Trophy Dash of
the year ! - Congrats on a great race. Scotty Murphy who has such a great season had
his night end early as a car spun in front of him coming into the backstretch and he had
no where to go except full-speed into the side of the car. The impact wreaked some
major havoc on Murphy's #77. We hope he gets his car fixed by the next race !!
And yet another night of jamb-packed excitement in the Hornet division ! With such a
large field of the little yellow wonders the racing is a ton of fun. Points and
Results for these guys will be available later this week.

A
great crowd turned out for the 5th race of the SRP Season - and they were not disappointed
! Word is getting around that Good Ol' Fashion racing is back at the historic
racetrack in Anderson. This weekend saw the Monster Energy Late Models do battle
with a growing field of 10 cars. Alan Pyszora set the fast time qualifying, Mr. Eric
Gannon won the Trophy Dash and Wild Bill Lancaster took the honors of the Feature Event
win. A big welcome to new SRP racer Kris Dressen and returning racer Rusty Robinett.
The
Modifieds saw the biggest field to date as well with 11 cars making the show. Guy
Young in the beautiful blue #7 mod took the quickest circuit of the track in qualifying
and Kevin Brink took home his first Trophy Dash hardware for the 2008 Season. The
Feature Event saw veteran racer Jack Epperson lead from start to finished virtually
unchallenged by the pack.
Mini
Stocks - WOW. The minis put on a great show all night long. Starting with Dale
Stelt ticking off a 18.388 second qualifying lap which he backed up with a Trophy Dash
Win. A big welcome back to the track for Paul Sabourin who celebrated his return by
taking the win in the feature event just over Scotty Murphy and Shane Spinner.
And
just when you thought it couldn't get any better, along come the Legends. These boys
really hit the pavement hard this weekend. Chad Foster has stepped up the pace and
was a solid challenger to Micah Parmer throughout the night's events. Micah Parmer
had the Triple Crown of the night after setting Fast Time, winning the Trophy Dash and
taking a late race lead in the Main Event to win the feature. After a dozen
side-by-side laps with buddy Chad Foster whose Monster Energy Drink #12 Legend Micah
finally made the pass to take the checkers.
The
Bombers rocked the house - Both Directions ! It was a night of enduro-style bomber
racing with races and qualifying running in the reverse direction - clockwise with
righthand turning. The fastest lap in qualifying was set by Lee Welch in the #1 -
but the Trophy Dash was nabbed by Wayne Lowe in the #2 Camaro. Lowe went on to win
the Feature Event as well with a pack of bashing and banging bombers behind him going in
both directions Lowe managed to avoid the mayhem and take the flag.

On a sadder note, JoJo Owens and the Legend Drivers made a Memorial Checkered Flag Lap
for JoJo's Grandfather who recently passed away. Our prayers and thoughts are with
Jojo and his entire family.

Howard Ford Wins Shasta Opener!
From the North State Challenge Series Website - www.northstatechallengeseries.com
Defending series champion, Howard Ford, won the season-opener for
the North State Challenge Series presented by Scottfeild Executive Hotels, after starting
from the pole position, but it wasnt as easy as it sounds. Struggling with an
ill-handling car, Ford would qualify at 16.302, sixth fast in the short nine-car field. As
luck would have it, the inversion draw came up six and Ford had the pole.
Fords luck took a turn for the worse when on the first lap, he spun
to the infield off the front bumper of 2007 Rookie of the Year, Riley Watson. Watson,
Ford, and eventual second place finisher, Dane Nissen, who also spun, went to the back of
the pack. CJ Bawden, in his first drive for BAD Racing, assumed the lead, on the restart
followed by local champ Steven Gannon and fast-timer Randy Houston.
Gannon and Houston looked like the cars to beat as they got by Bawden and
put some distance on the field. Houston made numerous bids to pass on the inside but
Gannon was able to hang tough in the upper groove. On lap 40 Brad Wasmund and Andrew
Snider made contact and spun in front of the leaders. Gannon contacted Snider and suffered
front-end damage, ending his night. Snider was able to continue.
Houston took his turn at the head of the field, chased by Bawden, Watson,
Nissen and Ford. Ford moved up to third at the halfway point in the 100-lapper and got by
Nissen for second, two laps later and set his sights on Houston. Ten laps later, Ford got
by a fading Houston who retired on the next lap with a dead battery.
After Watson blew a right front tire and hit the turn two wall on lap 63,
Ford led Nissen and Bawden to the green flag. Nissen, in his first race for Bay Cities
Motorsports, stayed on Fords bumper over the final 35 laps and looked like he had a
shot at the win. Ford was able to hang on to take the checkers and start his season on the
right foot.

The Modified Meeting was a positive exercise.
Thank you to all the owners, drivers, and officials who participated. The main topic
of the meeting was engine configuration and components. SRP has three engine package
configurations. The rule book stipulates. Briefly...
Package A:
GM Crate motor 8604, minimum total weight 2500 lbs, max 58% LS weight.
Package B:
IMCA legal cast iron heads and flat tappet cam, minumum total weight 2500 lbs, max 58% LS
weight.
Package C: Everything else, aluminum heads and roller cams, or cast iron
heads and roller cams, minimum 2550 lbs, max 56% LS weight.
These are the interpreted rules decided upon at tonight's meeting by the competitors,
tech officials, and the promoter and will be legislated accordingly.
Thus the #18 modified did not conform to the correct LS weight percentage based on it's
engine configuration for the race on 4/05/08 and will be penalized the points garnered for
the evening.
Additionally Bomber #54 will also be penalized 25 points for non-conforming wheels and
rear end configuration.
The #98 Bomber will be penalized 20 points for non-conforming wheels.
Update:
SRP Track Lighting
Last night with the help of a 60' boom lift donated by our friends at I-5 Rentals
we readjusted the track lighting. The turn three and four area is a great deal
brighter now. Tremendous job by Lee Crowell for doing the readjusting and thanks also to
Bobby Crowell and birthday boy Rod Pedersen for their assistance.
SRP now has a second 40' storage container which arrived late last evening.
It will be used to house the track sweeper and other associated track equipment.
Much appreciation goes to Borden Manufacturing for the time and effort they have
put forth to make this happen.
Congratulations go out to Dane Nissen for earning the $5 fine for the first driver to
tatoo the freshly painted SRP crash wall. Three cheers for Dane...you took the heat
of everyone else!
